Iāve been trying to avoid sharing this story but weāve been once again put in such a difficult situation that all I can do is share the facts & ask for help (again! š).
The other week we ended up caring for 3 cats, 3 dogs & 2 snakes! I kid you not.
These animals were taken in following an urgent animal welfare concern raised to us by a third party & reported to the police. 3 other cats had been taken in by us already from here. Unfortunately the police went in & removed the remaining animals without checking with myself (the manager) that this person had the authority to represent the charity or explaining what was involved. What they should have done was wait for the RSPCA who handle these situations.
It ended up in a very difficult situation were I felt like we had no choice but to act in good faith to ensure the animals received immediate safety given the initial call to the police had already been made & theyād already been to the property.
As a rescue we have had to cover vet fees & boarding costs for a week for these animals which we were not at all prepared for while an investigation took place. This has left us with over £1,000 in boarding fees, vet costs & other food costs for all animals. While this was supposed to be handled by the police we have ended up footing the bill for these animals.
This has already been on top of 2 emergency vet visits, 3 other cats thatād come from the same place, dentals as well as routine neutering for our other residents in April which had already been a very expensive month!
We ended up being stuck in the middle with police telling us one thing & the RSPCA another. The sheer incompetence of the police has been beyond belief. The RSPCA were correct & have taken over & sorted things out. Sadly they canāt help with the bill as they did not initiate this.
Originally I was going to keep quiet about this but Iām fed up of this being shoved onto me & the stress itās caused for the last week few weeks has been atrocious, while everyone else just washes their hands of it. Not to mention without doing an appeal we are really going to struggle as we could have in no way predicted this!
Thankfully the RSPCA have assisted & have sorted out the animals.
Just the bill thatās fallen on a small charity with a tiny budget! Iām having to be very careful about what I say but angry doesnāt even begin to cover it frankly as weād been getting back on track. The police officers I spoke with were not only incompetent in my opinion they were shockingly unprofessional.
So thatās the story of our stressful past week! Thatās why weāve been trying to get everyone to vote in the last STARS ballot so we could pay off our vet bill without having to try explain this story or do another appeal as people have already been very generous this month & Iāve really been trying to avoid having to ask for help.
Since not enough people voted if you are able to support us, even a small donation would directly help us cover these costs and help us keep our doors open & allow us to keep on helping cats & kittens like Martha & her family ā¬ļø
If you canāt afford to donate we completely understand. If youāre anything like us youāve been robbed blind at the petrol station already! But if you could like & share, you may know someone who can help.
