This will affect our air quality! Please consider objecting to the planning application .

Please share this post and help spread the word.

Residents have until 20th June to submit objections to the proposed quarry expansion in Trottiscliffe.

Planning Application: KCC/TM/0006/2026

(The link to the application is attached.)

This proposal could have a significant impact on our village, including areas close to our much-loved Primary School and Tennis Club. Many residents are concerned about the potential increase in dust, noise, traffic, and the long-term effect on the local environment and community.

Silica sand extraction can generate fine dust particles, and exposure to respirable crystalline silica is a recognised health concern. Many of us feel it is inappropriate for such an expansion to be proposed so close to places where children learn, play, and spend their time.

We need as many people as possible to make their voices heard. Please take a few minutes to review the application and submit an objection if you share these concerns. Every objection counts, and the more responses received, the stronger our community's voice will be.

Please also encourage family members, friends, and neighbours to submit their own objections before 20th June.

Thank you for your support. Together we can help protect Trottiscliffe.

SHE NESTED IN YOUR CLEMATIS IN MARCH. YOU PRUNED IT BACK LAST WEEKEND.
A pair of silver secateurs snaps through the dry, tangled stems of a wall-trained Clematis. Deep inside the dense canopy, completely out of sight, a female Common Blackbird (Turdus merula) panics and flees, abandoning a beautifully woven, mud-lined nest.

"I built inside this tangled wall because the stems were thick enough to hide my clutch from the predators above. You pruned from the outside. You didn't know to look inward."

We often view our spring garden clearance as a harmless, necessary tidy-up. In scientific reality, cutting back dense climbers right now is a devastating and illegal disruption. In late April, the UK bird nesting season is at its absolute peak. Up to 40% of urban blackbirds rely on thick climbers like clematis, ivy, and rambling roses for security.

They build their nests 15 to 30 centimetres deep inside the foliage, making them entirely invisible from the exterior. When you blindly cut away the outer growth, you expose the nest to fatal cold and opportunistic predators within hours.

Before you prune any climber between March and August, gently slide a bamboo cane into the deep centre of the plant. Tap lightly and listen. If a bird flies out, put the secateurs down immediately. She was there first. The pruning can wait until September.
