West Haddon Community Cinema is showing The Princess Bride next Saturday 17 January. If you are already a fan, donât miss this chance to see it on a big screen. If youâve never heard of the film â which I find hard to believe, because it was mentioned in all of director Rob Reinerâs obituaries following his tragic death a few weeks ago â let me explain why it is the best film ever made, and you should absolutely come and see it.
It has a superb cast. The first thing youâll say while youâre watching it is âIs that the boy from âThe Wonder Yearsâ?â and the second thing youâll say is âIs that Columbo?!â But youâll also recognise Peter Cook, Mel Smith, Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Wallace Shawn, Christopher Guest, and Chris Sarandon. You may not recognise Billy Crystal and Carol Kane under their many layers of make-up, but you wonât forget them.
Youâll be quoting from this film for weeks, possibly years or decades. The Princess Bride invented memes, thirty years before anyone knew what a meme was. People around you who have seen the film are already quoting it â you just havenât noticed. The car park in Daventry known as The Pit of Despair? Princess Bride quote. âInconceivable!â? Princess Bride quote. âAs you wishâ? Princess Bride quote. Anyone ever waved you off saying âHave fun storming the castle!â? Also a Princess Bride quote. Although maybe that one is just me.
Donât be put off if you donât like princesses. Itâs not that sort of film. And while yes, she is a bride, the wedding is short, and memorable mainly for the comedic talents of the mighty Mr Cook. The film also includes two of the best sword-fights ever committed to celluloid. And one of the worst special effects, but the story is so good at that point that nobody really cares.
Itâs a comedy. Itâs an action adventure. Itâs a fairy-tale. It is a brilliant, hugely enjoyable film, and it will stay with you.
It is really helpful for the community cinema if you book your tickets in advance, so they know how much popcorn to get in and how many chairs to put out. Details on the poster.
