We've managed to nab Marnie last minute for (almost) a week of fun to keep the kids entertained

We'll have our club running Mon, Tues, Weds, Fri from 10am until 3pm with lunch and snacks included. Suitable for P1-7

Highlights ~ AUCHENGRAY

🔨 A Glimpse into Auchengray’s Past — The Village Smithy, 1942
We recently came across this fascinating auction advert from 28 January 1942, announcing the sale of the contents of “The Smithy”, Auchengray, on Saturday 7 February.
And what a glimpse it gives us into village life all those years ago!

The auction included a 500-gallon petrol pump, blacksmith’s bellows, two anvils, vices, a petrol/paraffin engine, power and foot buffing machines, a boring machine, taps and dies, tools, bolts, nuts, rivets, scrap iron and even a small henhouse! 🔧🐔

But who did the smithy belong to?
Local historical research tells us that James Bell was the village blacksmith, serving Auchengray from the 1880s until the Second World War. The smithy stood at the southern end of the row of Auchengray cottages.

James Bell was clearly a well-known figure in the village. In January 1913, when a group of performers became stranded in Auchengray during a snowstorm, they took shelter in the smithy, where James lit the forge to warm them.

There is even evidence that James was still working as “James Bell, blacksmith, Auchengray” in 1940, just two years before this auction.
