A few photos from the last craft evening before the summer break. Three crafts were tried / revisited; polymer Clay, needle felting, and paper flowers.

Thank you Helen for giving up your time to plan and encourage others to try the various crafts each month.

Craft evening begin again in October.

100 YEARS OF HARBURN ‘RURAL’

2026 is the centenary of Harburn SWRI/SWI affectionally known by many as ‘The Rural’.
These photos were taken at our celebratory exhibition in May. The exhibits were all belonging to members and were displayed in twenty year groups, 1920’s and 30’s, 1940’s and 50’s, 1960’s and 70’s, 1980’s and 90’s, 2000’s and 2010’s, and finally 2020 - 2026.

The exhibition was put together by a committee of previous and current Presidents. The celebratory table cloth was the idea of Secretary Claire Duncan, who spent many hours looking back through the archives for photographs throughout the years, and printing them onto the cloth, the tea cups around the edges were printed by Claire, using a Lino Cut block and then decorated using various craft methods by our members. The piece was then put together by Claire and member Caroline Hampson.

Three of the invited guests spoke for a short while, Harburn Institute Honorary President Margaret Rennie, SWI National Chairperson Suzy Finlayson, and Midlothian Federation Chairperson Lynda McClurg, all congratulated Harburn on reaching a centenary, and wishing them many more years to come.

The exhibition was well attended, with some former members visiting to enjoy the afternoon with us. Members from other institutes within Midlothian Federation also visited.

Huge thanks must be given to all the members who loaned items and clothing (including Wedding Dresses) for the displays, who provided the abundance of sandwiches, cakes, scones and home made jam - of course - , and to all the helpers clearing tables and serving teas and coffees.

Here’s to the next 100 years.
