Sandwell Young Carers

Sandwell Young Carers Sandwell Young Carers provides support and activities to young carers around Sandwell.

Young Carers are young people under the age of 18 who look after a family member who is ill, has a disability, is experiencing mental distress, is affected by alcohol and/or substances misuse. They may provide hands-on caring, and/or may be affected themselves by someone in their family who needs care. They do many tasks around the household such as;
domestic chores - cleaning, cooking, shopping & ironing
domiciliary tasks - washing, dressing & toileting
family responsibilities - money management, caring for siblings etc. medical care - administering medication, injections, ventilators
emotional support - for all the family members as well as the cared for. Of course caring for someone is a tough job, but when it is someone between the age of 5-18, its a lot harder. The young people find no time for themselves with coming back from school and then having to do their daily household chores. So Sandwell Young Carers helps these youngsters, it gives them something to do as well as somewhere to go. And this charity helps the young people and gives them a break from caring for their Parents/Gaurdians and/or Siblings.

We also had our Forum session today alongside our short breaks activities!

❄ We started off with an classic icebreaker game of "Agree/ Disagree/ Not sure"

With one of the questions being about pineapple on pizza! We had a lot of disagrees on that!🍕😂

Today we had our Under 11's Short Breaks activity!

🪄 We had arts & crafts, outdoor play and magic tricks on today's agenda!

Then the young carers went to their group support session: Today's theme was social skills.

🎲 The young carers went round in circle answering the questions on the cube, we had a few new members today so it was wonderful way for everyone to get to know eachother!

We got to spend time with Joanne when she joined us for the BBC Children in Need Interior Design Masters Celebrity Special where she helped transform our centre.

It's International Music Day and we are shining a spotlight🌟 on our beloved music room that was designed by Martin Kemp in the BBC Children in Need Interior Design Masters Celebrity special episode!

🪗 Our young carers use this space to write songs, practice playing instruments and perform songs together.

✨ During our short breaks sessions they love spending time in this space and it's beautiful watching their talents shine!

💫 Another Saturday another Short Breaks session!

💙 We welcomed our Over 11's in today to have some downtime and a break from their caring role.

🍂 They did some autumnal crafts and watched a film in the chill-out room.

🌸 In group support today the young carers continued with the theme of friendship and made some friendship flowers, describing what makes a good friend.

✨ It's another Under 11's Short Breaks session today!

Todays group support session was a continuation of friendship from last week.

🌸 The young carers used the friendship flower to say what they look for in a friendship and how they are a good friend.

🌿 The petals are what they look for in a good friend, and the leaves are how they are a good friend.

We had some beautiful friendship flowers by the end of the session!

💭 Also today we had our Forum session with our over 11's, they brainstormed some ways to promote young carers and came up with some fab ideas so make sure to watch this space!
