The BookWorms met today to discuss “On The Street Where You Live” by Mary Higgins Clark.

The book gripped everyone from the very start, the plot developed quickly and it kept a good pace throughout. We liked the characters, they were well written although some readers got a little confused on who was who but that did not detract from the overall enjoyment of the book. The story was nicely complex and kept everyone guessing right until the very end.

A very satisfying read, we gave the book 9 out of 10.

Our next book group meeting is at 10:30am on Monday 6th July at East Ayton Lodge Hotel. The book is: "The List of Suspicious Things" by Jenny Godfrey.

“Yorkshire 1979, Maggie Thatcher is Prime Minister, drainpipe jeans are in and Miv is convinced that her dad wants to move their family down south because of the murders.

Leaving Yorkshire and her best friend Sharon isn’t an option, no matter the dangers lurking round their way; or the strangeness at home that started the day Miv’s mum stopped talking. Perhaps if she could solve the case of the disappearing women, they could stay after all. What the real mystery Miv needs to solve is the one that lies much closer to home.”

Our book group is part of East and West Ayton WI. If you think you may be interested in joining our WI why don’t you pop along to one of our Monday coffee mornings at East Ayton Lodge hotel. We meet every Monday (except Bank Holidays) from 1030am to 12noon. You would be very welcome!

Four courageous members took part in the Federation Quiz on Monday evening 18 May. out of 80 questions the best score was 55 and our team achieved 47 - a result shared with several other teams so they were 6th equal, which for a small branch we felt was most satisfactory. Well done Jenny, Maureen, Christine and Ann.

The East & West Ayton WI Bookworms met at East Aton Lodge on monday 11th May at 10:30 to discuss The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese. This was a long difficult read for our members which most didn’t finish. It followed a family in Southern India that’s suffers a peculiar affliction. In every generation at least one person drowns. We scored 6/10. It was well written however too descriptive and too long.

The Bookworms will meet up again on Monday 1st June 10:30 at East Ayton lodge to discuss their next book On the Street Where You Live by Mary Higgins Clark. A gripping novel about a women who is haunted by two grisly murders separated by more than a century , yet somehow inextricably linked……

We are looking for new members to join our lovely friendly WI, please feel free to join us for coffee at 10:30 at East Ayton Lodge every Monday morning apart from bank holidays. Hope to see you there.

The BookWorms met today to discuss “A Stranger in the Family” by Jane Casey.

This was the 11th book in the Maeve Kerrigan crime series and as such the history between detectives Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwent impacted on the story; the novel couldn’t really be read as a stand-alone book as we initially thought. The distraction of “romantic involvement” between the 2 detectives was excessive at times given that they were trying to solve a double murder. There was a confusing number of characters, however they were well written with the underlying plot of disappearance and murder nicely complex. The actual disappearance of the child Rosalie, the subsequent murder of her adoptive parents, and ultimately the “who dunnit” was well presented although a little rushed at the end. We gave the book 7 out of 10.

Due to the Bank Holiday on the 4th May, the next book group meeting at East Ayton Lodge Hotel on Monday 11th May. The book is “The Covenant of Water” by Abraham Verghese.

“Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water follows a family in southern India that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning - and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century a twelve-year-old girl, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this poignant beginning, the young girl and future matriarch - known as Big Ammachi - will witness unthinkable changes at home and at large over the span of her extraordinary life, full of the joys and trials of love and the struggles of hardship.”
