The Earth takes a few hours over 365 days to travel around the Sun. These extra hours amount to a full day every 4th year, hence we have 29 days in February in leap years to allow the calendar to synchronise correctly. Similarly, there is are 11 days, 1 hour, 31 minutes and 12 seconds difference between the solar year and the lunar year. Since Hindu calendars are based on the Moon, every 32 to 33 months, we have the equivalent of an extra month built up. So to synchronise the two calendars, and extra month is inserted in the Hindu calendar.
Without this correction, Hindu festivals would shift seasons. Diwali might fall in summer. Holi might land in winter. The extra month keeps everything aligned perfectly especially for India's seasonal farming cycle. Often referred to as Adhik (extra) Maas (month), or Mal (impure) Maas since no religious festivals take place either.
People considered it bad luck. They avoided all auspicious events during it, however Lord Vishnu changed it completely by adopting the month. He declared it the most sacred of all months. Since then, Mal Maas became Purushottam Maas forever. Purush means “being” or “soul.” Uttam means “supreme” or “highest.” Together, Purushottam means “the Supreme Being.” This is also one of the most beloved names of Lord Vishnu. Hindus also use this name for Lord Krishna. Chapter 15 of the Holy scripture, The Bhagavad Gita is called Purushottam Yoga. In that chapter, Lord Krishna calls himself the Supreme Being who transcends all.
During this month, all devotees should chant Lord Vishnu’s names, read the Bhagavad Gita and Bhagavatam, fast on ekadashi (11th day) make donations of food, clothes, and money to the needy, visit temples and holy sites, live a simple, satvik life, light lamps to Lord Vishnu everyday and practice meditation, prayer and Bhakti for inner reflection.
This month, all Hindus will avoid all weddings/marriage ceremonies, any griha pravesh (house warming ceremony), any new business ventures, or purchasing expensive items or jewellery, all non-vegetarian food and alcohol, negative speech or thoughts, and should respect our elders and holy community.
Purushottam Maas is hence a very auspicious month for acheiving good Karma.
A very Happy Purushottam Maas from everyone at BSNL.
Aum namo bhagavate vasudevaya!
