what wildlife you might find in a Welsh rainforest?🌳

Temperate rainforest, often called 'Celtic rainforest' in Wales, is wonderfully wet woodland simply dripping with all kinds of life 🌱🦋

These special habitats are in areas influenced by the sea, and this climate produces high humidity, regular rain and mild, fairly stable temperatures. All these factors together create the perfect conditions for lots of wildlife to thrive.

Once covering large areas of the UK, and other parts of the world, these woodlands were destroyed over thousands of years for logging and development, and now only fragments remain.

These now-rare cooler climate rainforests are home to beautiful birds like Pied Flycatcher and Redstart, mammals such as Pine Marten, fantastic fungi including Turkeytail and various stagshorns, along with many marvellous mosses, ferns and lichens.

Have you been lucky enough to walk through a Celtic rainforest?

This , why not learn more about them 👉 www.montwt.co.uk/habitats/woodland/temperate-rainforest

🐦 – Week 25: Swallow - Listen for a bubbling stream of chatter overhead…

Swallows don’t give a single clear whistle – instead, their song is a rapid, bubbly, musical twittering, full of cheerful warbles and trills, often ending in a distinctive dry rattle or click.

It can sound like: “twit-twit-twirr… prrrrt!” A fast, musical chatter that flows and tumbles along, delivered on the wing, or perched atop telegraph wires. If the sound seems to pour out continuously while the bird is flying acrobatically, you’re likely hearing a Swallow.

Watch the video to tune in to the sound, then visit our website for the full guide and longer recording: https://www.montwt.co.uk/songbird-saturday/swallow

Many people think moths – gwyfynod – are drab, brown, and a little… forgettable. But look closer, and you’ll see that this reputation couldn’t be more wrong.

Take the Brimstone Moth (Melyn y Drain): soft yellow wings like a fallen leaf glowing in twilight. Or the wonderfully clever Buff-tip (Blaen Brigyn), perfectly disguised as a snapped birch twig… how many have you overlooked without even noticing?!

The Buff Ermine (Ermin Llwydfelyn) brings a touch of elegance, scattered with dark speckles like ink on parchment. Meanwhile, the dazzling Large Emerald (Emrallt Mawr) shines in fresh green hues, as if it has borrowed its colour from new summer leaves.

Far from being dull, moths are masters of disguise, beauty, and surprise. Some even fly by day—and many come with unforgettable names. Look out for the True Lover’s Knot, the Figure of Eight, the mysterious Old Lady, the striking Scarlet Tiger, or the shimmering Burnished Brass… could there be a more characterful cast of creatures?

So next time you see a flutter of wings, pause and take a closer look. There’s a hidden world of colour and curiosity all around us.
