Sharing again as heatwave today and tomorrow. Please check on vulnerable neighbours.

With another heatwave approaching we wanted to share some tips on how to ensure you keep cool under extreme temperatures.

As well as closing curtains and windows during the main part of the day, you can perhaps look into some alternative methods of keeping sun away from your windows, especially if south facing.

Low cost manually retractable awnings can be temporarily installed on some windows, these are available through some online traders at very reasonable cost and can be very effective. ( the vertical poles compression fit between ground and lintel)

Reflective window insulation, these are similar to the screens you often see inside cars, and can be fitted with suction cups to the window, most effective if fitted to outside of window, but inside is still good.

The recent periods of hot weather have prompted us at WEN to reflect on a really useful session hosted by Sustainable Wells earlier this year at Wells Town Hall.
The session focused on something many of us don't think about until it's too late – having a household emergency plan in case flooding, wildfire or another emergency means you have to leave your home quickly.
With recent heatwaves bringing an increased risk of wildfires across the UK and Europe, and following the flash flooding in Wells earlier this summer, now is a good time to ask yourself:
Would you be prepared if you had to evacuate at short notice?
Think about your home's risks
• Are you near a river, stream or low-lying area that could be affected by flash flooding?
• Do you back onto fields, woodland or open countryside where wildfire could be a risk?
• Do you have more than one safe escape route if your usual route was blocked?
What would you take with you?
Consider putting together an emergency grab bag or making sure you know where these essentials are:
• ID and important documents (insurance, medical information, etc.)
• Any medication you need
• Mobile phone, charger and a power bank
• Wallet or purse with bank cards
• Key contact details (saved on your phone and/or written down)
• A change of clothes for a day or two
• Essential items for pets
• A plan for where you could go if you had to leave your home
Spending just a little time planning ahead could make a huge difference in reducing panic and stress during an emergency.

We’re delighted to share that a new climate adaptation project has launched in Somerset! 🌱

Over the next 12 months, Somerset Wildlife Trust will be working with the University of Bristol and the Somerset Council on Act Together to Adapt. A project focused on bringing community knowledge into local decision-making.

Communities across Somerset are already thinking about how climate change will affect where they live, and this project will help connect those ideas and plans with the people and systems that can help make them happen.

The project is funded by the MACC Hub, a UK-wide research initiative supported by Defra and UKRI.
