Wells Cathedral School has a long tradition of Music Specialists who have gone on to be very successful in the fields of Jazz and Commercial music. Recent pupils have studied jazz at The Royal Academy of Music, Trinity College, London and The Guildhall School of Music & Drama as well as numerous other specialist courses in the UK and abroad. The Jazz Orchestra has performed and given workshops nationally and has worked with many eminent jazz musicians including P*e Wee Ellis, Iain Ballamy, Tommy Smith, Gareth Lockrane and Mark Nightingale.
The Jazz Picnic is always a highlight of the year. From 12pm on Saturday 25th June, we will feature our senior jazz Combo, the 'Jazz Disciples' and the Jazz Orchestra as well as our training group, the Jazz Ensemble.
The Jazz Orchestra, who headline the event, will perform an eclectic selection of big band repertoire from classics by Count Basie and Benny Goodman through to modern rock big band arrangements by the prolific arranger and composer Gordon Goodwin and his Big Phat Band. They will also be featuring some really excellent vocal guests from within the band.
Edward Leaker, Head of Jazz and Popular Music at the school says "The Jazz Picnic is always a joyful celebration of music making. The current cohort of pupils features a particularly talented crop of young jazz musicians. This is always a lovely way to end the year and to say a big thank you and goodbye to those pupils who are moving on to music conservatoires next year".
