The Memorial Orchard A community orchard of Cheshire heritage fruit trees in memory of those who served in the two World Wars and more recent conflicts.

Originally planted in 2015 within Thorn Wood by volunteers, now managed by the Woodland Trust. The Memorial Orchard group began meeting in 2014 with the aim of establishing a community orchard of Cheshire heritage fruit trees; particularly the 'Wareham Russet'; in memory of all those who served in the two World Wars and more recent conflicts. The orchard now has approximately 160 fruit trees, mostly apple with a couple of Hazel Pears and damsons. The Memorial Orchard is situated within Thorn Wood on Northwich Road between Weaverham and Hartford, CW8 3AN.

🍏🍎 Lovely morning for a walk to the orchard. Not much to report, trees mostly looking well. One, in the photo, is a bit confused as to what season it is! All the apples have gone, if you’ve enjoyed any please let us know what you did with them, even if it’s just eat them!

We have been surprised by recent DNA analyses which have shown that our Wareham Russet saplings have the same DNA as the Dutch variety Lemoen. Our original grafts were taken from a tree previously identified by the late Cheshire apple expert, Tony Gentil, as the only known existing Wareham Russet tree. We approached the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale Farm, Kent, in 2015, they advised, on the basis of samples submitted to their fruit identification service, that our apple trees matched the physical description of the Wareham Russet. On the basis of this confirmation our apple trees were propagated, planted and sold, in good faith, from an original tree known locally as a Wareham Russet and hope that our trees can continue to be known as such.

Some very sad apple trees down at the orchard this morning but plenty of pollinators and other insects around. Yet again the butterflies were too quick for me!

🐦‍⬛ Birds at the orchard today identified by the ‘Merlin’ app. I also saw Wood Pigeons and a Jay.
