Little Cassiobury CIC Looking to secure the future of Watford's finest classical house.

Little Cassiobury is a Community Interest Company (CIC) looking to secure the future of "Watford's finest classical house" which is currently on the 'at risk' register. Little Cassiobury CIC is looking to turn the property, which dates from the late 1600s and one of only two Grade II* listed buildings in Watford, into an arts and heritage centre. The plans include creating studio spaces for artist

s as well as teaching areas for artistic and creative people of any age wanting to develop their skills.

If you would like to join the Friends of the Museum of Watford - The MoW you will have free access to talks and tours, and the satisfaction of directly supporting vital funding for acquisitions, conservation, and learning programs, while enjoying social events with like-minded enthusiasts. It's a way to feel part of the museum, getting closer to the collections and staff, and helping preserve history for future generations.

This is an exciting time for the Museum as it prepares for the move to new premises in the Town Hall. The MoW is closed at the present time and has plans to reopen to the public as part of the larger Town Hall Quarter project. In the meantime there are a number of events taking place including their Museum on Tour programme. The Friends will continue to run talks and tours throughout this time.

Yearly subscriptions to join the Friends are £15 per person. If you wish to join or require any further information please email: [email protected]

This charcoal drawing shows Adele, Countess of Essex, 1910. Painted by John Singer Sargent. It is currently on show at Kenwood House as part of an exhibition of American women who married into the British peerage between 1870 and 1914.

Adele Beach Capell nee Grant was born in 1866 in New York, she died in Mayfair, London in 1922. In 1893 she married George Devereux de Vere Capell, 7th Earl of Essex, at the relatively late age of 27. Her project became the restoration of Cassiobury House. She was known for her vegetarian activism and Sargent wrote that ‘She was infinitely nicer than the Incroyables she flocked with and didn’t resemble.’
