My 193Heritage project continues and this year I am hoping to step up the game. Last week I went to Cultra on the outskirts of Belfast, to visit the Ulster Folk Museum.
I met Peter Sloan, a heritage carpenter and we discussed 1890s “vernacular” woodworking techniques. I learned about bog wood and now Sligo is famous for the making of Tuam chairs.
I also met Bob Johnston in the Basket Maker’s Workshop. He uses over ten varieties of willow and reminded me that weaving was once survival technology (including eel traps over 7,000 years old!
And finally watching master weaver Dianne Shaw work Donegal wool on a historic 1890s loom was very inspiring. The process can take three full days just to prepare before weaving even begins.
This visit deepened my understanding of the importance of traditional craft for survival and identity.
