Watford Social Centre For The Blind

Watford Social Centre For The Blind The Centre provides support and social contact for the blind or visually impaired who live in Watford and the surrounding areas.

The Watford Blind Centre is an independent self funded charity relying on donations to operate. We meet weekly in the centre of Watford at The Rene Milton Hall, which was named after our founder chairman and is owned by the charity. The centre is supported and led by a group of volunteers who are not carers or linked to the social services but individuals who enjoy working with others. Help and ad

vice can be provided about equipment and gadgets for blind and partially blind people. We are able to provide an opportunity to meet socially with those who have a similar disability and support our members with help and advice about equipment and gadgets for blind and partially blind. We welcome new members of any age who are blind or visually impaired and who are able bodied within Watford and the surrounding areas. Our weekly programme is as follows:
- Mondays 11-11.30am: Keep fit
- Mondays 11.30am-2pm: Various activities including knitting, scrabble, art, darts, cribbage, dominos, singing and drama
- Wednesdays 11am-2pm: Social meeting with various events and activities. Visits from schools, informative talks, visits from choirs, outings. Lunch is available

Outings
The members enjoy outings during the year to well known places such as hotels, garden centres, golf clubs and gardens for lunches or tea. Holidays

It’s that time of the year when some of our members head on holiday for the week. This year they are in Eastbourne and have largely managed to escape the rain showers, although today threatened to blow a few of our lighter members into the sea!

The last few days have seen them enjoy afternoon tea at the Victorian Tea Rooms, a walk in Peace Gardens, games and quiz evenings and a trip on the sightseeing bus.

Tonight they are looking forward to a night at the Hippodrome for a variety show after dinner.

It makes me tired just thinking about it! Wonder what the next few days will be filled with? More updates to follow soon.

Members had great fun exploring using their sense of touch and smell this week while trying their hand at some flower arranging.

The hall was a hive of busy fingers and chat as they felt their way though the various foliage and flowers to make their master pieces. Even those who started out being reticent enjoyed putting together an arrangement to be proud of.

We have some very talented florists amongst us.

We took delivery of two new garden benches at our Monday Club yesterday which are now at the rear of our hall.

As it’s not a very inviting area to sit, members helped plant up some hanging baskets and troughs while enjoying the sunshine. It was so lovely to witness them enjoying doing some gardening and what a great job they did.

The new gardening club has been well and truly formed!

A few weeks ago we posted that our lovely member Jim was embarking on the 100km Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.

We are delighted to report that Jim, his son and Grandson completed the walk on 18th April. An amazing achievement.

Thank you to everyone who has already supported the challenge by donating via his JustGiving page to our charity.

Member Jim is about to undertake the gruelling Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. His story is below and if you could spare a pound or two it would give him a boost to complete it.

It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Sue and volunteers from Woodoaks Farm, including our own VI member Edita to club this week.

What an engaging and educational talk we all enjoyed.

Thank you for all your hard work to make sure it was inclusive and entertaining for us all.

Members had a fantastic time on Wednesday enjoying a full Christmas lunch rounded off with mince pies and chocolates.
We may have been short on numbers due to illness this year but it didn’t stop those that could join us having a great time.
Thank you to our amazing volunteers Hilda and Rene for cooking the lunch and who, between them, have over 80years of volunteering for our charity!

What a run up to Christmas we have had at our club sessions.

Last week we welcomed 60 Year 1 pupils from St John’s CofE primary school who came and sung their Nativity play songs to us. The singing was joyful, energetic and wonderful all in one and we loved having them all.

Our Working Age Group enjoyed a fun, and quite competitive morning ten pin bowling. Congratulations to David who came out as best scorer.

And then our Monday group enjoyed games and a party lunch at the beginning of this week. They were challenged to throw a 3 dart highest score, indoor bowls as well as other fun challenges. Much laughter, smiles and friendship was shared by the group.

We finished with our Wednesday club full Christmas lunch yesterday with photos to follow soon.
