SERV Wessex - The Blood Runners The service covers Hampshire, South Wilts and East Dorset Our tasking includes the movement of blood products, pathology samples and urgent medications.

SERV Wessex is a charity that provides a rapid response service delivering blood products, pathology samples, collection/distribution of Human donor milk for the NHS and blood resupply to HIOWAA. SERV Wessex is a registered charity (No. 1156383) that provides a free out of hours logistics service for NHS Hospitals and critical care units across Hampshire, East Dorset and South Wiltshire. Additiona

lly, we provide a collection service for Human donor milk from mothers within the community which is treated and stored at the Human Milk Bank in Southampton. We then respond to the needs of the regions Neo Natal Units, transporting and distributing the donated milk for the care of premature babies. We resupply the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (currently based at Thruxton) with blood for use by the helicopter and rapid response vehicles. This is done every 24 hours, and more often when supplies are depleted. We operate 365 days per year, between 19:00 and 07:00 weekday evenings and 24hrs a day at weekends and on public holidays. We also provide a booked daytime service during the week. The services provided by SERV Wessex allows hospitals and critical care units to divert financial and staff resources elsewhere. Our team of volunteers comprise; riders, drivers, dispatchers and supporters. Our riders and drivers all hold advanced riding/driving qualifications. All volunteers give up their own time to cover the shifts, in all weathers, throughout the year. We have a fleet of 3 motorcycles and 2 cars, although many volunteers use their own vehicles and donate the use of their own fuel.

Its not always samples and blood we do. Donated human milk is also a big part of our work. Yesterday was an epic for us with 39lts being collected from the donor mum and delivered up to The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. I round trip of 220 miles.
Husband & wife team, Pip & John Varley a Dispatcher and rider, rose to this challenge collecting from Leila Parkes the donor mum.
Donated milk is hugely important for newborns whose own mums perhaps cannot give their own milk.

The month of March has been our busiest month so far this year. A huge thank you to all our volunteers who give up their precious free time and in all weathers to support the NHS, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and communities across our region to move urgent consignments including our service to the mums who donate human milk for the Southampton Milk Bank which then supplies the Neo-Natal units across our region. Our services save the NHS a significant amount of money, enabling those funds to be directed to essential patient care.

Part of the increase in tasking has come about from an extension to our service for the NHS. Exciting times for the charity as we take on further services which directly benefit the Hospital Trusts across Hampshire, East Dorset and South Wiltshire.

Just another quiet night for most! Another great example of the great work that all the Blood Bike charities do. In this case it was 4 of Blood Bike charities working in unison to move an urgent consignment from Torbay Hospital all the way to Great Ormond Street Hospital in the 'quiet' hours of 2nd April.
4 charities, 4 dispatchers and 4 riders; all making it possible for the NHS at no cost.
Thank you to South West Blood Bikes - Serving Devon, YFW Bloodbikes and SERV Surrey & London and of course the personnel of SERV Wessex - The Blood Runners riders Dave H & Rupert H and dispatcher Zain A.
All of our personnel are volunteers, we get no funding from the government or the NHS -

A brilliant day fundraising at Tesco's Amesbury. We are so grateful for the generosity of the public who stopped by to say hello to our volunteers. As ever, hearing peoples backstories is both heartwarming and often emotional.

A big thank you to the management team of Tesco's Amesbury and especially the lovely Laura Allies who extended the invite and looked after our team throughout the day.

Fundraising is a key part of what we do; it enables us to operate all of our services in support of the NHS across Hampshire, South Wiltshire & East Dorset and of course the support we provide for the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
