For Andrew and George, Walking Rugby has become much more than a game. It's something they can enjoy together as father and son.

Having been part of Warrington Wolves Community Foundation's Walking Rugby programme for the past two years, Andrew has seen first-hand the difference it has made to George's life. "It's probably the best thing that's ever happened to George. He was very quiet and kept himself to himself, but it's brought him out of his shell, built his confidence, helped him lose weight and allowed him to make a lot of friends."

For George, sharing the experience with his dad has made it even more special.
"It's amazing. We get to spend time together doing something we both enjoy."

While Walking Rugby provides a great way to stay active, stories like Andrew and George's show that the benefits go far beyond fitness. The sessions help people build confidence, develop friendships, feel part of a team and create lasting memories with those closest to them.

The pair were among more than 60 players from Warrington Wolves Community Foundation, Hull FC and Moore RUFC who took part in last weeks Walking Rugby showcase at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, demonstrating how the sport is bringing communities together through a shared love of rugby.

We are incredibly proud to announce that Warrington Wolves Community Foundation has been selected as one of the Mayor of Warrington's official charities for the 2026/27 civic year.

For over 20 years, we have been working to create a happier, healthier and more connected Warrington through sport, education, health and wellbeing, disability inclusion and community engagement.

Being chosen as one of the Mayor's charities is a fantastic honour and recognition of the impact we’re having every day across our town.

We look forward to working alongside the Mayor and fellow nominated charities throughout the year, raising awareness and vital funds to help us continue changing lives across Warrington.

In just two weeks’ time, our Heroes of the Wire riders will set off on a remarkable journey through France and Belgium to honour the memory of Warrington’s fallen rugby league heroes.

Over four days, the team will cycle 230 miles, visiting battlefields, memorials and cemeteries connected to the players who left Warrington to serve their country during the First World War and never returned.

Each rider has been allocated one of our fallen heroes, ensuring their story is carried with us every mile of the journey.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the challenge so far, whether through sponsorship, fundraising, volunteering or simply helping us spread the word.

Keep an eye on our socials while they’re over there as we’ll be sharing the stories of the heroes they’ll be remembering and bringing you live updates as they make their way up the Western Front.

We will remember them. 💛💙

"It's really good for your health and wellbeing.”

Former Hull and Carlisle player Karl Portz was one of more than 60 participants who took part in Friday night's Walking Rugby showcase at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Having played professional rugby league in the 1980s, Karl knows the game as well as anyone, but says Walking Rugby still provides plenty of exercise.

"You wouldn't believe that you'd be out of breath playing Walking Rugby, but you are. It's good fitness and it's good for your health and wellbeing as well."

While there was plenty of friendly competition on the pitch, Karl highlighted one of the biggest benefits of Walking Rugby – the friendships it creates. "We've already shaken hands and I'm sure after the game we'll have a catch up. There might even be players I've played with or against in the past."

Walking Rugby continues to bring people together through a shared love of rugby league, helping participants stay active, improve their wellbeing and build lasting social connections.

Our Walking Rugby sessions take place every Tuesday at Whitecross Community Centre and are open to people of all abilities and experience levels. Whether you're a former player looking to reconnect with the game, want to stay active, or simply meet new people in a friendly and welcoming environment, we'd love to see you there.

Yesterday was an incredibly special day as John Peake, a former Warrington player, took to the pitch at the Halliwell Jones Stadium as part of our Walking Rugby showcase.

More than 40 years after representing the club at Wilderspool, John pulled on the primrose and blue once again.

After an injury brought his playing career to an end and a later Parkinson’s diagnosis presented new challenges, John’s GP referred him to our Walking Rugby programme nearly three years ago.

Stepping onto the pitch before kick-off was an emotional moment.

“The grass is different but representing the club again has brought back so many memories. I never thought I’d get the opportunity to do something like this.”

John’s journey is a powerful reminder of what Walking Rugby can offer. It’s not just about staying active; it’s about reconnecting with the sport you love, building confidence, improving physical and mental wellbeing, and feeling part of a team once again.

Yesterday’s showcase, which saw more than 60 players from Warrington Wolves Community Foundation, Hull FC and Moore RUFC take to the field, highlighted how Walking Rugby is creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds and abilities to enjoy rugby in an inclusive and supportive environment.

For John, it was more than a game. It was a chance to represent his club once again, over four decades after his playing days at Wilderspool, and to show that rugby can remain part of your life no matter what challenges you face.

At Warrington Wolves Community Foundation, we’re proud to provide opportunities that help people stay active, connected and part of the Wolves family, regardless of age, ability or circumstance.

What a fantastic showcase of Walking Rugby at last night's home game against Hull FC! 👏🏉

Ahead of kick-off, over 60 participants from Warrington Wolves Community Foundation Walking Rugby, Hull FC Walking Rugby, and Moore RUFC Walking Rugby took to the pitch to demonstrate the power of the sport.

The occasion was a brilliant example of the opportunities that Walking Rugby can provide. Among those taking part were players who had only recently discovered the sport, with some stepping onto a rugby pitch for the first time just a few months ago.

Walking Rugby is about much more than the game itself. It provides a fun, inclusive, and accessible way for people to stay active, improve their physical and mental wellbeing, build confidence, make new friends, and feel connected to their community.

At Warrington Wolves Community Foundation, we're proud to create opportunities that help people of all ages and abilities get involved in rugby, develop new skills, and experience moments like these that they may never have thought possible.

A huge thank you to everyone from Hull FC, Moore RUFC, and our own Walking Rugby programme who took part and helped showcase how rugby truly is a sport for all.

Volunteers’ Week Spotlight: Saskia 💙

Saskia first joined the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation as a volunteer after returning home from university, looking for a way to reconnect with her town and become more involved in the community.

What she found was so much more.
“I love how it brings the community together. Rugby brings people in, and the community activities give them a reason to stay.”

Through her volunteering, Saskia became part of a team dedicated to making Warrington a happier, healthier and more connected town. Her passion, commitment and enthusiasm quickly shone through, and we’re delighted that she has now joined the Foundation as a paid member of staff.

Reflecting on her journey, Saskia said: “The joy that surrounds all of these activities and everything that we do here at the Foundation is so obvious. I’ve got so many ideas, but really I’m just looking to keep bringing things that previously weren’t available to people with SEND more accessible.”

Saskia will be working on creating even more opportunities for local people, particularly by making music, art and culture more accessible for those who attend our sessions.

Thank you, Saskia, for everything you’ve already contributed to our community. We can’t wait to see the impact you’ll continue to make in your new role.

We’re proud to welcome you to the Halliwell Jones Stadium as part of this incredible journey, raising awareness and support for those affected by Motor Neurone Disease.

Your determination, commitment and passion are inspiring communities across the country and shining a light on a cause that means so much to rugby league and the wider sporting family.

We wish you the very best of luck as you continue your journey north and thank you for everything you are doing in the fight against MND.

Safe travels 💛💙
