The Friends of Culcheth Linear Park This Facebook site aims to support the work of the Friends of Culcheth Linear Park by helping to promote the Park to all interested parties.

The aim of the Friends of Culcheth Linear Park is to improve and maintain the Park as a valuable local open space to benefit the villagers of Culcheth, Croft, Glazebury and Risley and the surrounding areas. Improving and promoting the facilities, plants and wildlife will enable the Park to be used for educational and recreational activities - including health and social well-being, recreation and leisure activities - which will help to improve and enrich the lives of present and future visitors of all ages and abilities.

Culcheth Linear Park - volunteers keep busy on an Autumn morning

It certainly felt rather autumnal this week for our October volunteer working party, with our volunteers enjoying a mixture of sunshine and showers as they got stuck into another busy morning around the park.

There was plenty for our volunteers to do in this special green space including:

Planting for the future - A fantastic 600 native bulbs were planted, including daffodils, bluebells, wild garlic, snowdrops and wood anemones. We look forward to seeing them emerge and bring a splash of colour to the park in the months ahead.

Keeping on top of the saplings - Work continued on removing sycamore saplings to help maintain the park's natural environment.

Getting ready for nesting season - Our volunteers cleaned out the bird boxes, discovering a tiny blue tit nest containing two little eggs left over from last season. Although finding unhatched eggs might seem a little sad, it is a completely normal part of wild bird life. The important thing is that the box has now been cleaned and is ready to provide a cosy winter shelter for our local birds before the next nesting season begins in spring.

Treating our park to a little care and attention - The newly renovated picnic bench on the green received a fresh coat of paint, while work continued on restoring our much-loved ‘Bear & Elephant’ bench.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers who gave up their time and braved the autumn weather to help look after Culcheth Linear Park. Your hard work makes a real difference and helps keep this special place welcoming for people and wildlife alike.

Culcheth Linear Park – October Volunteer Working Party

Our October Volunteer Working Party is coming up, and we’d love to see you there!

There’s plenty to get stuck into this month, including:

* Removing sycamore saplings
* Cleaning out bird and bat boxes
* Restoring the ‘Bear & Elephant’ bench

If you fancy a few hours in the fresh air, meeting friendly people and helping to care for this fantastic local green space, why not come along?

Whether you’ve volunteered with us before or it’s your first time, everyone is welcome.

Culcheth Linear Park – celebrating another fantastic bat walk season

Earlier this month we hosted our fifth and final bat walk of the year – and what a fantastic season it has been!

All five walks were incredibly popular, with every place filled as soon as the dates were released. And as dusk fell, participants at the events, were treated to a wonderful display of bat activity around the park.

Guided by ecologist Rob Smith, walkers explored the park using bat detectors, listening for these fascinating nocturnal mammals as they emerged to feed. It was a wonderful opportunity to discover more about the wildlife that calls our park home.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and for your generous donations. Your support has enabled us to purchase two bat monitors, which will help us continue learning about and protecting the park’s bats.

Culcheth Linear Park - volunteers treated to ‘fly past’ while working

A huge thank you to everyone who turned out to help with our September volunteer working party.

We made great progress on a whole range of jobs including:
* Surveying bird boxes
* Digging out sycamore saplings
* Tidying up the area around the bear and elephant bench
* Clearing brambles from the path alongside Eleven Acre Common - an important Local Wildlife Site adjoining Culcheth Linear Park
* Renovating the picnic bench on the green

There’s still plenty to do, so we’ll be continuing with these jobs at our October session.

A lovely wildlife highlight from the morning session was when our volunteers spotted a variety of birds that call the park their home, including:
* Coal Tit
* Blue Tit
* Great Tit
* Long-tailed Tit
* Nuthatch
* Chiffchaff

And flying over the park was a flock (or skein) of Pink-footed Geese - fresh arrivals from their breeding grounds in Iceland and Greenland, heading to the UK to spend the winter.

Thousands more will be arriving, so keep your eyes and ears open when you’re visiting the park. You may spot them flying overhead in their distinctive V formations and hear their calls as they move between local fields and marshes.

Another great morning on the Linear Park – thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help look after this special place.

Culcheth Linear Park - September Stroll

Why not join us on Sunday 6 September at 11:00am for a relaxing walk through Culcheth Linear Park as summer begins to give way to autumn.

Our guided walk will be a chance to enjoy the changing season, discover some of the park’s wildlife and plants, and see some of the work our volunteers have been involved in along the former railway line.

Look out for the first signs of autumn, including changing leaves, berries, seeds and fungi, while keeping an eye and ear out for the birds and other wildlife that make the park their home.

Whether you’re a regular visitor or have never explored Culcheth Linear Park before, everyone is welcome to come along, enjoy the fresh air and discover something new.

Come and enjoy a walk, a chat and a closer look at the wonderful nature on our doorstep.

As there is limited parking at the Linear Park - Partridge Lakes have kindly offered the use of their car park. So why not pop in to the cafe after the walk and treat yourself to some tasty food and drink.

Culcheth Linear Park - smiles all round from our volunteers

Our latest working party proved once again that our volunteers are happy to turn their hand to anything — from cutting and clipping, brushing and painting, seed sorting and repairing steps, to even emptying the poo bins when it’s needed!

And the results are clear to see in these photos, along with the smiling faces that show just how much fun volunteering can be.

The hard work and commitment of our volunteers helps to maintain and enhance Culcheth Linear Park, ensuring it remains an attractive, welcoming space for both people and wildlife.

Our next volunteer working party will take place on Saturday 12th September at 9.30am. Further details will be published nearer the time.

A little reminder for dog walkers

If you’re walking your four-legged friend in the park and find that the poo bin further up the park is getting full, please help us by taking your bag to one of the bins nearer the car park, which are emptied more frequently.

Alternatively, please take it home with you.
