Our thanks to Laurence and Thomas for a super finale to this Summer series at Holy Trinity Warrington!

A lovely varied programme - in fact two concerts in one! We started with Laurence on cello playing music, that just seemed so right for the church! Bach’s cello suite, written between 1717-1723 and a chapel has been on that site since 1708!

Joined by Thomas for the rest of the programme, it was a chocolate box of delights! Handel and Gounod gently filled the church - ‘Ave Maria’ so sweet to hear in the surroundings!

The drama of the ‘Montagues and Capulets’ gave way to the familiar melodies from ‘The West Side Story’! A soulful, if haunting, ‘Kol Nidrei’ was the end of the programme!

There was a sense of disappointment that it was over, but they had one more treat in store! ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’ from Morricone! A crowd pleaser to be sure!

Great concert to close on!!

Well ‘that’s a wrap’ until September! We’ve loved staging this series of concerts and thank everyone who has joined us at one, or all of them 🥰!

We look forward to seeing you in Autumn! In the meantime we wish you a blessed, joyful and (hopefully) sunny Summer!

What a great concert today by Voluta Quartet an award winning ensemble from the RNCM!

There was one composer and one piece on the programme - Dvorak. What to expect?

‘Poetic and expressive, the landmark String Quartet No. 13 in G Major, Op. 106 (1895) shows Dvořák in his creative prime. “What marvelous music,” says Gramophone magazine. “Why is it so rarely heard? . . . Why don’t some of our younger quartets tackle this masterpiece?”’

Well one of them has and we heard it in all its glory today!

We were knocked out by the four movements each one with its own character. Applause rang loudly as the piece culminated in its fiery finale!

This was the first time Voluta have played for us and it definitely won’t be the last! Dvorak wrote for each instrument allowing each performer to shine, but then in combination they were sublime! Our thanks to Kaylee, Emily, Marie-Carmen and Ruaraidh!

We were treated to a lively encore from a current Australian composer, Anne Cawrse! We all left with a spring in our step!

Our thanks to Sophia, Ling, Kairiu and Julie for what our audience described as an ‘outstanding’, ‘unbelievable’, ‘amazing’, ‘incredible’ concert!

The audience has spoken and we all agree!

Sophia (12) played four pieces, from an elegant and richly harmonic Haydn Sonata, through a flowing and fiery Schubert Impromptu, to Chopin! The three Ecossaises were playful and charming, leading to the much loved and electrifying Fantaisie Impromptu!

Ling (12) gave us a bright and lively Bach, and a lyrical and energetic Chopin.

Kairui (17) performed a sparkling and joyful Bach and a brilliant and melodious Mendelssohn.

This wonderful recital was brought to a close by Julie who performed a fiendishly difficult suite by Stravinsky! High energy, wild jumps across the keyboard, sometimes brooding and often structurally chaotic, Julie mastered this virtuosic work, originally written for Arthur Rubinstein, a 20th century maestro of the piano!

Oh my goodness! A great concert to be in the audience for!

We congratulate all our young pianists on their superb performances today!

Could I play piano like they did? The answer is a definite no! But then .. ‘I’m always chasing rainbows’ 😄

We are delighted to have welcomed choristers from the Ignatius Singers to Holy Trinity Warrington today, with a programme focussing on light!

We heard superb harmonies, from note perfect, marvellous voices, that filled the Church. We may have some ‘minor’ cracks in the ceiling, but none today in the singing!

Laurence led the Choir beautifully, in music that was perfect for the Church.

In this unsettled world, what a glorious 45 minutes we spent together - an orchestra without instruments, heavenly music, to raise the spirits.

I think the translated words of ‘Sicut Servus’ by Palestrina said it best today.

‘As a deer longs for springs of water,
so my soul longs for you, O God’

Psalm 42 v.1

Our thanks to Laurence, the Ignatius Singers and to Warrington Musical Society for their support in staging this wonderful choral concert.
