I would like to take this opportunity to share some very good news with all of our Friends and Young Friends members, followers and supporters.

We have been shortlisted for the following Wilder Cheshire Award

We are one of three groups that will find out on Thursday November 12th at a ceremony at Chester Zoo who the lucky winners are in our specific award.

Today we continued to trim some bigger branches and cut nettles back from near the limetree play ground and also the large section of nettles and brushes have been cleared away from the path near the adventure play area between the slopping football pitch and the woodland archway. This means the path is much wider to walk along.
Also some litter picking and woodland work

As you walk along the pathway by the small playground (lime tree playground) you will have probably noticed that its much wider and brighter. Over the last few weeks a couple of members of the Friends of Woolston Park
have been busy cutting back the hedgerow and low hanging branches bit by bit to allow more space and vision for people walking or cycling along but also so there is more room to enter or leave the playgroud with young children making it better for all our park users. We also had volunteers working around the woodlands, litter picking and painting the green cabin, and doing some general repairs.

Towards the end of July, a small group of home based Environment Agency workers, volunteered to spend a day on Woolston Park. Some of their team had travelled a long distance to spend the day with a member of the Friends of Woolston Park.

They concentrated on cutting back the undergrowth around a few small trees near the bandstand as well as trimming the greenery to the side of the path that runs in the direction of the pond

They were really enthusiastic and did a great job. Our thanks for doing this work. The frog found scurrying in the undergrowth was successfully guided on their way and suffered no injuries

Trees as you know are important to our environment. Each year the Woodland Trust hold a vote for the "Tree of the Year"

Votes have to be submitted by 5pm on the 29th September which is the closure date for voting.

On the 17th of this month we held a fundraiser to help raise funds for the group and what a lovely day was had by all. Wheather you enjoyed a cake and drink or trying your luck on the tomobola to purchasing various plants and we also had bird feeders/boxes to duck food amd beatiful handmade jewery as well as some bubble magic and bee craft items. It was all very well received and enjoyed by all. We have so many people we wish to thank for making this day happen, from donated plants to cakes (yummy) to tombola items and handmade bird feeders and boxes to handmade jewery and to everyone who voluntered their time. BIG THANK YOU

We have some plants still for sale if you wish to purchase them, come along to the green cabin on Mondays when we are there and we will be very happy to see you.

Ongoing maintenance on the Park saw FOWP members being supported by four employees from Serco spending the day last Wednesday 5th August working on the park. The job included cutting back the ever invasion of brambles on the hill by the kingfisher play area.

The brambles; although very good for birds, butterflies, animals and insects need to be controlled, otherwise we will lose a large area of the field to the encroaching brambles.

The volunteers did a marvellous job and the area is now much wider than previously and importantly, butterflies, birds etc still have plenty of fruit to choose from.

Next Monday the 17th August from 1pm - 4pm the Friends of Woolston Park are running a fundraising event on the Park. This will be set up down by the bandstand and Kingfisher Play area. We will be selling, teas, coffees, cold drinks cakes and plants

If you are free then please pop down and support us in our fundraising, as all money will benefit the work that we are doing.
