Our next film, on Friday, Nov 6, is a beautifully wicked, dark comedy about art, ego, and the perfect family fraud. Disgruntled adult siblings Barnaby and Sallie secretly hire art restorer and forger Lori Butler (Michaela Coel) to infiltrate the London townhouse of their estranged, aging artist father, Julian Sklar (Ian McKellen). The plan is for Lori to find and complete or forge his mythical, unfinished series of paintings - known as "The Christophers" - so the children can cash in after his death. Instead of a simple con, Lori and Julian form a complex, adversarial-yet-symbiotic relationship exploring art, ego, and legacy. Watch the official trailer here …

Here are our next four films. We do our very best to pick a mix of genres and choose films that we hope our existing audience will enjoy, while also looking to tempt new people. As we're sure you all know, it's very difficult to please all of the people all of the time. Sometimes we might choose a film you're unfamiliar with, please don't let it put you off ... google the reviews, watch a trailer, maybe just give it a go 🙏 It's only £5, you'll be supporting a local venue, potentially meeting new people - and getting a free cuppa! Pop the dates in your diary now and we'll look forward to seeing you ☺️

Please save the date of our next community film … Friday, Nov 6. It’s said to be an engaging, well-acted, dark comedy. It features Ian McKellen as an aging, cantankerous painter whose adult children hire a struggling art restorer/forger to secretly finish some of his work before he dies. We’d love to see you there 🙏🏻

A little bit about our history and what we do ...

Movies at the Milner is a community film night, held once a month at the Milner Church Institute in the village of Moore, but attended by people from a wider area including Daresbury, Sandymoor & Walton. The film night began in 2010 with some start-up funding from Halton Borough Council, which enabled the organisers to hire-in equipment and technical support to run a pilot programme.

In 2011 the Milner Church Institute received National Lottery ‘Awards for All’ funding to expand its pilot and purchase its own audio-visual equipment, sound system, projector and screen. This grant funding was given on the basis that it would enable the remote village community to enjoy community activities and reduce isolation.

The monthly film night ran successfully for 10 years, until the Covid pandemic hit. Film showings then ceased for approximately 18 months. On resumption, the original volunteer team asked to step down and a new team of local volunteers was established. In November 2021, we restarted the film night on the first Friday of each month.

People attending pay £5 to watch the film, which includes post-film tea & biscuits. From any takings we deduct the cost of purchasing the DVD, the copyright fee for a public showing (usually just over £100 per film) and any other legitimate expenses, eg. the cost of refreshments. The balance of any takings is paid to the Milner Church Institute, which is a registered charity and the venue where our film night is held.

Choosing which films to show is always a challenge. We try to show relatively recent films across a range of genres. We are also governed by whether or not the public showing licence is available and we can purchase a DVD (although live-streaming is an option). We cannot get licences for certain films, eg. those made exclusively for streaming channels like Netflix and Prime.
