A Community of Friends with a Special Building in Common

For over 150 years St John the Evangelist’s Church has welcomed people of all faiths and none. The Friends Group has been established to help provide the means to ensure that it can continue and improve its ability both to serve as gathering space for the whole of the local community and also to foster links with an extended community who have a connection to this special place. That connection may stem from religious ceremonies that have taken place here (baptisms, marriages, funerals), its architectural splendour or just that its a place of peace in a busy world.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) carries the ultimate responsibility for the care, maintenance and improvement of the church. But they need help. Its right that the faithful should fund the religious activity at the church through the annual payment to the Diocese of Salisbury of the ‘share’, which funds a range of outputs; the main one being the salaries and training of clergy. Sadly most years there is little or no money left to undertake additional maintenance tasks, let alone to improve the facilities at the church. This is where the Friends can step up and help.

We need to raise funds and to give our time, skills and energy to address the priorities that we will agree with the PCC. But we also intend to have some fun along the way. And if we are successful, not only will we help support the church building and churchyard, but we will also help foster our local community as well as binding in an extended community with a connection to our special church.
