So good to return to Warfield Village Fete, having not been able to attend last year. The fete seemed busier than ever, as were we! Great to meet so many like-minded people and hear what everyone's doing for wildlife in their gardens too. Even visited by some wildlife - a dark arches moth πŸ¦‹πŸ’š

Thank you to the Warfield Fete committee for organising another fantastic community event 😊

'Found a leech', not words we thought we'd ever say until we started riverfly monitoring as a means of checking local water quality. Held our second survey this week. Highlights included: freshwater duck mussel (estimated 10-15 years old, a good sign), funky videos of the leech and a damselfly larva, and we used our Hanna checkers too πŸͺ±

Survey data is not publicly available, however we are looking to develop a simple representation of our data to include on our website for those who are interested. Our website is currently being updated so look out for an announcement coming soon πŸ“Š

Good to say hello to those who popped by too πŸ‘‹

May is a special month for UK bumblebees – the Big Eight are joined by some of our rare and less common species πŸ’›

πŸ‘‘ This month, some of these rare and less common queens will emerge from hibernation. Already active queens will produce their first daughters – the workers πŸ’Ό

🎱 For the Big Eight, some queens will produce their first workers while others will welcome new males 🚹

What bumblebees have you spotted recently? How many have you seen so far this year?

Water is essential for wildlife to thrive, especially as we've had little rain in recent weeks. However, here's a gentle reminder to change water daily and clean once a week πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈπŸ˜

Thanks to Claire for the video edits πŸ’š

Delighted to report we have been successful in securing a Thames21 Empower Rivers Community Grant for Β£637 to support our monitoring of water quality in the local area πŸŽ‰

As well as buying these little beauties - Hanna checkers to test for phosphates and ammonia which come from sewage, agriculture, industry waste and urban run-off - we have also completed the purchase of equipment for our monthly riverfly monitoring. This increased monitoring of our waterways will enable any issues to be identified and resolved more quickly and hopefully lead to an improvement in water quality in the longer term πŸ’™

Next riverfly monitoring taking place on Wednesday afternoon! Do come and say hello if you're near The Cut behind Warfield Primary School or later at Westley Mill πŸͺ±
