ils provides a unique and exciting insight into the lives of these marine creatures from the Late Jurassic Kimmeridgian period, how they bred, lived and died. The collection has become publicly available for the first time, housed in a purpose-built museum, learning and visitor centre in the village of Kimmeridge, on the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. A virtual aquarium and interactive exhibition brings to life the incredible stories from deep time (152-157 million years ago) and conveys the fascination and curiosity of the collector, Steve Etches. The Etches Collection is the result of over 30 years dedicated and skilled discovery, collection, preparation and research of Kimmeridgian fossils by palaeontologist, Dr Steve Etches MBE. A plumber by profession, Steve’s achievements and contribution to the world of palaeontology have been recognised with awards from The Palaeontological Association (The Mary Anning Prize, 1993 and 2005), The Geological Society of London (the R.H. Worth Prize, 1994), The Geologists’ Association (The Halstead Medal) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Southampton in 2017. In 2014, Steve was awarded an MBE for services to Palaeontology, the first time an MBE has been awarded for this category. A NATIONAL TREASURE:

The Etches Collection receives great patronage from UK and international palaeontologists, geologists and scientists in recognition of the superior status of both the collection and its collector. It has also been the subject of great wonderment and excitement for many of the children who have come to see and learn about Steve’s fossils! The collection was housed in Steve’s converted garage. It had always been Steve’s hope that the collection would be available to the public, housed together in the area that the fossils were found. This dream has now been realised. In 2014 Steve gifted his invaluable collection to the nation and a local landowner donated land in Kimmeridge. Planning permission and funding was secured to create a world class, accredited museum to house the collection, so that the fossils can be enjoyed and used as a basis for learning and research by all. In 2021 the museum received the accolade of Designated Status. A BRAND NEW IMMERSIVE MUSEUM:

Visitors enter the Exhibition Gallery and are taken on an immersive journey through life underwater 150 million years ago. Using CGI projected on the ceiling and wall panels, the space is transformed into an aquarium of the past in the blink of an eye. Objects that once seemed static will be brought to life and represented as if they were modern day animals. Directly beneath the ceiling, the fossil specimens are carefully presented and interpreted to bring to life their individual stories. Visitors leave the museum recognising that the fossils are tangible evidence of living beings and that there are a wealth of untold stories to explore and discover as well as a lot to be learnt from this former life on earth. AN ONGOING VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY:

The pursuit of making new discoveries, revealing more stories about the world of the Kimmeridgian is a constant for Steve Etches. That is why the museum space is not only a home for his collection but also a dynamic research centre and workspace that enables Steve and his team to continue his work of discovery, preparation, analysis and curation. The centre offers an excellent visitor attraction and superb facility for community, educational and corporate groups. It is a resource for education and knowledge, a centre of excellence and facility for the local community, an ideal space for inspiring events, seminars and talks, and a must on the itinerary of every tourist and visitor to the area. K1666 is a small, complete unidentified reptile bone collected from Dorset in July 2004. Although we do not currently know exactly which animal it belonged to, it comes from rocks that preserve a wide variety of Jurassic marine reptiles.

During the Jurassic, the seas covering what is now Dorset were home to reptiles including ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs and pliosaurs. These were not dinosaurs, but separate groups of reptiles that evolved different ways of life in the oceans.

Small isolated bones like K1666 are often the specimens that spark the most curiosity. Steve Etches has always placed great value on unusual finds like this because the answer is not always obvious, they may turn out to be a piece of a known animal, or they may represent something unexpected waiting to be discovered.

Pliosaurs were the top predators of the Jurassic seas, and their skulls were built for delivering an incredibly powerful bite. Record breaking among marine reptiles. Their large savage teeth were designed to grip prey, while the robust skull and jaws could withstand enormous forces.

Some pliosaurs had teeth several inches long, and their jaws could be lined with dozens of them. Unlike many modern predators, they weren't necessarily slicing through their prey, those thick, robust teeth were ideal for puncturing, gripping and crushing.

Pliosaur bite marks have also been on other marine reptiles, providing direct evidence that these enormous predators fed on some of the largest animals around.

The skull of Allosaurus was built for a very different world.

Look closely and you’ll notice the large openings in the skull. These spaces helped reduce weight while still allowing room for the attachment of powerful jaw muscles.

With a long skull, sharp teeth and strong jaws, Allosaurus was perfectly equipped to take on the large animals that shared its Jurassic home.

Nature has a clever way of making something both lighter and stronger.

This isn't a dinosaur. It's a pterosaur, one of the flying reptiles that lived alongside the dinosaurs more than 150 million years ago.

This skull was a truly extraordinary discovery that represents a completely new genus and species of pterosaur, Cuspicephalus scarfi. Not only that, it was the first pterosaur skull discovered on the Jurassic Coast in around 200 years, making it an exceptionally rare find from Dorset's Jurassic rocks.

Its long, pointed skull inspired the name Cuspicephalus, meaning "pointed head". The species name scarfi was given in honour of British cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, whose distinctive caricatures often featured exaggerated noses. One in particular caught the authors' attention: his famous portrait of Margaret Thatcher.

Discovered by Dr Steve Etches MBE, this remarkable fossil revealed a flying reptile previously unknown to science, right here on the Jurassic Coast.

K1678 preserves the neural arches, spines and haemal spines of Coelacanthus, an extinct coelacanth fish that lived during the Late Jurassic, approximately 157–145 million years ago. This specimen was collected from Dorset in December 2004.

Coelacanths belong to an ancient lineage of lobe-finned fishes that first appeared over 400 million years ago. Unlike most modern ray-finned fishes, lobe-finned fishes have fleshy, muscular fins supported by bones, a feature that gives clues to their evolutionary relationship with the first four-limbed vertebrates. Today, coelacanths are famous for the discovery of living species in the 20th century, after scientists believed the group had gone extinct at the end of the Cretaceous.

The name "pliosaur" can be confusing. Pliosaurs weren't a completely separate group from plesiosaurs, they were part of the plesiosaur family tree.

Plesiosaurs evolved into several different forms. Some developed long necks and relatively small heads, while others evolved short necks and enormous heads, the animals we commonly call pliosaurs.

Among the earliest were the rhomaleosaurids, followed by the true pliosaurids, including giants such as Pliosaurus and Liopleurodon. Later, during the Cretaceous, another group of short-necked plesiosaurs evolved that could look remarkably similar to Jurassic pliosaurs.

So although they looked very different, these animals were all part of the same extraordinary plesiosaur lineage, a group that dominated marine ecosystems for more than 150 million years.

That long tail acted as a counterbalance, helping this giant predator stay stable as it ran and turned through the Jurassic landscape.

As important as Sara's tail would have been, we can't help but wish we could see her wag it like a happy dog!
