“It was hard at first… but once I got it, it was fun.”

This was feedback from one of our Butterfly Arts participants during our workshop with ENACT and it made me think…

I thought punch embroidery would be a fun, immersive activity. But in a 90-minute session, some girls never quite made it to the “fun” part.

Whenever I see girls disengage because something feels difficult, I must rethink and adapt.

The Gifted Butterfly Arts Project is designed to build confidence, resilience and self-esteem. But I’ve learned that some craft activities have a ‘delayed reward curve’ and require patience before they feel enjoyable. Other crafts provide quick wins.

Signs of withdrawal, frustration or perfectionism are often signals to slow down, adapt and introduce activities where success can be experienced early.

I believe confidence is fragile. It is shaped by how these moments are held and celebrated. So we’re learning to balance quick wins with meaningful challenge, where every girl not only takes part, but has the opportunity to fly.

Have you ever felt misunderstood in school or work?

A few of my friends and colleagues are having adult assessments for neurodivergence. I’ve never been assessed. But I know I think differently. And I have to work twice as hard.

Through The Butterfly Project, I now see many girls whose stories echo parts of my own.

Girls who arrive in secondary school carrying years of unrecognised needs.

Girls who were quietly supported in primary school but never formally assessed.

Girls whose anxiety, silence, masking or behaviour are misunderstood.

Girls whose struggles are explained away as attitude, hormones, culture, language barriers or parenting.

Too often support only comes when things reach crisis point such as; attendance drops, mental health declines or exclusion becomes a risk.

Masking isn’t always about hiding neurodivergence.

Sometimes it’s about staying safe. It’s about survival.

Avoiding being labelled difficult.
Avoiding punishment.
Avoiding humiliation.
Avoiding being misunderstood.

Many girls learn this very early.

Does any of this sound familiar to you? I’d love to hear your experiences (as a parent, educator, or someone who has lived this themselves).

This might be controversial. Many of us parents remember that moment when our child’s body odour suddenly becomes noticeable and we find ourselves asking, “When last did you have a shower?” Whether our approach is subtle or direct, there’s no judgement here.

Along the way, phrases like “bed rotting” and “hygiene avoidance” creep into our vocabulary. I’ve even heard teenage girls jokingly describe showering as an “allergy.”

Teenage years bring new hygiene demands: body odour, skincare routines, hair washing and styling, and managing menstruation products. These changes can introduce new sensory experiences and expectations.

While we’re increasingly aware of executive functioning and sensory sensitivities, not every behaviour has a clinical explanation. Sometimes teenagers are simply navigating a lot of change.

But if hygiene avoidance becomes persistent, distressing, or linked to strong sensory discomfort, it may be worth exploring further. The aim of an assessment is not to pathologise normal teenage behaviour, but to understand when someone may benefit from support or practical adjustments.

Sometimes what looks like laziness is really a teenager feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start.

Understanding the barriers often helps us find solutions.

If your daughter struggles with low self-esteem, read this.

Many parents try to boost confidence by giving more praise.
But constant compliments don’t always build self-belief. In some cases, they can even make children depend on external validation.

What helps more is understanding what’s underneath the behaviour.

Is she:
• Being overly self-critical?
• Avoiding challenges because she fears failure?
• Struggling to accept praise or criticism?
• Losing motivation at school?

Often these are signs that a young person feels uncertain about their value or capability.

Instead of rushing to reassure them, try asking:
“What feels hardest about this right now?”

When children feel safe to talk about their struggles, they begin to develop resilience, emotional awareness, and real confidence.

At The Gifted, we support girls and young women who are struggling with confidence, motivation, and self-belief, helping them rediscover their strengths and potential.

If you’re worried about your child, send us a message to learn more about our programmes.

This group of brilliant young people recently joined us at the Royal Institution, for a live BBC recording of the Christmas Lectures . An iconic space many had never stepped into before.

For the young people and families we support, the challenge is rarely interest or ability but it can often be access and opportunity. Access to inspiring spaces. Access to opportunities that help young people see themselves as belonging.

At The Gifted, we work to ensure young people are not excluded from enrichment experiences that shape confidence, aspiration and future pathways.

These moments matter and they shouldn’t be the exception.

If you’re an institution interested in widening access, or a parent keen to stay connected, we’d love to hear from you.

2026 will bring:
✨ More partnerships.
✨ More access.
✨ More possibilities.
