A Tribute to a Son of Jarra, a Servant of Humanity:

Celebrating Ismail B. Ceesay

As part of UKJA’s ten‑year anniversary celebrations, it is both fitting and profoundly meaningful to pay tribute to a truly remarkable individual - a quintessential Jarranka, one of Jarra’s great sons, and a towering example of service, generosity and leadership. This individual is none other than Ismail B. Ceesay.

From the earliest years of UKJA, Ismaila has stood firmly with the organisation, not merely as a supporter, but as a believer in its mission and a champion of its vision. This commitment was evident from the outset, beginning with a generous donation of £1,000, followed by another £1,000 to ensure the success of UKJA’s very first fundraising event in Reading. During one of Ismaila’s visits to London, time was taken to personally meet UKJA’s executive members - a gesture that spoke volumes about genuine engagement, humility and solidarity.

One of Ismaila’s most poignant and impactful contributions came in response to an urgent appeal to support schoolchildren in Jasong Village, Jarra, who were learning while seated on mats on classroom floors. Without hesitation, Ismaila answered the call, providing furniture that restored dignity, comfort and a more enabling learning environment for those children. This act alone reflects a deep understanding that education is not merely about buildings, but about dignity, care and opportunity.

In the area of health, Ismaila once again demonstrated visionary generosity by contributing towards the expansion of the maternity ward at Soma Regional Hospital, directly improving maternal healthcare and outcomes for countless families. Further underscoring a lifelong commitment to education, Ismaila donated D50,000 to help establish the Educate Jarra Project Scholarship Fund, opening doors for young people whose potential might otherwise have gone unrealised.

As Ismaila has often stated, the motivation to give is rooted in seeing others who are committed to giving back to Jarra - a philosophy that perfectly mirrors UKJA’s own ethos.

Beyond UKJA, Ismail B. Ceesay’s life journey stands as a testament to excellence, perseverance and service. Rising from humble beginnings in Jarra, Ismaila broke barriers to become the first Managing Director of The Gambia’s first public transport company, later serving with distinction as The Gambia’s Ambassador, before moving on to the global stage as a senior staff member at the World Bank. Few lives so seamlessly bridge local roots and global impact.

Ismaila is like the sea - generous, vast and far‑reaching - with benefits that extend well beyond any single organisation. A leader. A diplomat. A public servant. A philanthropist. A champion of community. The pride of Jarra. A role model whose life inspires generations to believe that service to humanity is the highest calling.

As UKJA celebrates a decade of service, a grateful community extends its deepest appreciation to Ismail B. Ceesay for unwavering dedication to Jarra, to The Gambia, and to the world. This is not merely a celebration of ten years of UKJA, but a celebration of a life lived in service.

A Tribute to Hon. Seedy Keita – A True Champion of Jarra and UKJA

As the UKJA marks its tenth anniversary, it is only fitting that we pause to honour one of the most remarkable individuals to have supported our journey: Hon. Seedy Keita, the current Finance Minister of The Gambia.

There are many supporters of UKJA, but Seedy Keita occupies a special place in our history. He is a man who believed in UKJA long before others did. He saw potential where others saw challenges. He believed in Jarra when many had overlooked its possibilities. Most importantly, he was willing to put his reputation, influence, and career on the line to help transform the lives of our people.

While serving as a Director at the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Seedy played a pivotal role in facilitating a grant of US$100,000 for UKJA’s Educate Jarra Project. This remains the largest single funding contribution ever received by UKJA and stands as a testament to the confidence and trust he placed in our organisation and its vision.

The impact of that funding continues to be felt across Jarra today. It enabled UKJA to construct modern science and computer laboratories, refurbish the library at Soma Upper Basic School, and provide essential textbooks and learning materials to students. These investments have opened doors of opportunity for countless young people and have strengthened educational standards across the region.

What makes his contribution even more remarkable is that it was never simply about securing institutional support. Beyond the IsDB grant, Seedy personally invested in the development of his community. He donated D50,000 to the UKJA Scholarship Fund, helping deserving students pursue their education. He also contributed D100,000 towards the purchase of medical and surgical equipment for Soma Regional Hospital, helping improve healthcare services for the people of Jarra.

Significantly, all of these contributions were made long before he became a Cabinet Minister and before he entered politics. They were not motivated by political ambition or public recognition. They were driven by something far more powerful: a genuine love for community and an unwavering commitment to giving back.

Seedy Keita has always understood that community service is not charity. It is a responsibility. It is an opportunity to repay a debt to the communities that nurtured us, educated us, and shaped who we become. He exemplifies this philosophy through his actions, generosity, and leadership.

His commitment was not from a distance. During the implementation of the Educate Jarra Project, Seedy personally visited Soma to inspect the construction works and witness the progress firsthand. His presence demonstrated not only his support but also his deep personal investment in the success of the project and the future of Jarra’s children.

Today, as UKJA celebrates a decade of service, development, and community transformation, we express our deepest gratitude to Hon. Seedy Keita. We thank him for his generosity, his kindness, his vision, and his unwavering belief in UKJA. We thank him for believing in Jarra and its people. We thank him for taking risks, for opening doors, and for helping us achieve what once seemed impossible.

A grateful community salutes him. A grateful UKJA honours him.

Hon. Seedy Keita is, without question, one of Jarra’s finest sons—an outstanding public servant, a dedicated community builder, and a lasting inspiration to future generations.

Thank you, Seedy. Your legacy in Jarra will endure for generations to come.

We’re proud to share a significant milestone for the UK Jarra Association (UKJA) 🎉

Thanks to the generosity of AXS, UKJA has received a donation of 29 laptops, strengthening our mission to expand digital access and educational opportunities across Jarra.

The handover brought together AXS representatives Noel Edwards, Mark Porter, and Momodou Sanneh, alongside UKJA trustees and leadership.

Speaking on behalf of UKJA, Trustee Kebba Sanneh expressed sincere appreciation and highlighted the vital role of ICT in today’s world. He also reaffirmed our commitment to ensuring these laptops are distributed where they will have the greatest impact—with a detailed report to follow, reflecting UKJA’s strong values of transparency and accountability.

Through partnerships with organisations including the Turing Trust, Allan & Nesta Ferguson Foundation, and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), UKJA continues to drive meaningful change. Our impact includes the construction of science and computer laboratories in Soma and Bureng, as well as the donation of laptops to schools across Jarra.
Former Chairman Bamba Mass also reflected on our work in healthcare, particularly the expansion and refurbishment of the maternity ward at Soma Regional Hospital - benefiting countless families.

This is more than a donation - it’s an investment in the future of our communities.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to AXS for their support and shared commitment to making a difference.
