Calling all choral music lovers. South Oxfordshire Choir is continuing to welcome new members as it prepares for an exciting new term and a special concert celebrating the work of women composers.
The new term begins on Monday 7 September, with rehearsals taking place every Monday evening from 8–9.30pm at St Mary-le-More Church, Wallingford. Over the coming weeks, the Choir will learn 10 short pieces composed by women from across the centuries.
Despite the wealth of outstanding music written by women, many female composers have received far less recognition than their male counterparts. South Oxfordshire Choir aims to help redress that imbalance with a concert, A Celebration of Women Composers, on Saturday 21 November at St Mary-le-More Church.
Drawing on the anthology Choral Music Composed by Women, the programme spans an extraordinary range of musical history, from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. It includes works by composers such as F***y Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Florence Price and Ethel Smyth, alongside a piece written by a talented member of South Oxfordshire Choir itself.
If you’re a bass, tenor, alto or soprano, and might like to join the Choir, there is no need to book in beforehand for the term. Just turn up on 7 September (or a Monday night after that) and receive a warm welcome. No audition required. www.southoxonchoir.org

What a superb time South Oxfordshire Choir had yesterday rehearsing Vivaldi’s Gloria and a Bach Cantata for the concert last night, in the expert hands of our music director Crawford Rowbotham.

South Oxfordshire Choir is going to be performing Vivaldi’s Gloria, one of the world’s most popular choral works, in St. Mary’s Church, Cholsey OX10 9PP on Saturday 18th July at 7.30pm as part of the Cholsey Festival of Music. Also in the programme will be a Bach Cantata, making the concert a true celebration of two major and well-loved composers of the Baroque music era.
The concert fits South Oxfordshire Choir’s growing reputation for ambitious and varied performances, from classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions. Supporting the Choir in Cholsey will be a string quartet, trumpet, and oboe, and four superb solo singers. Only one week to go until our spring concert of uplifting anthems at St. Mary's Church Wallingford on Saturday 21st March at 7.30pm. Members of the audience can get their tickets on the door on the night. See you there.

The South Oxfordshire Choir is a non-auditioned choir singing a variety of choral and popular music. We put on 2 or 3 concerts a year in the Wallingford area. Rehearsals are at Moulsford Prep School on Mondays from 8pm to 9.30pm.

Give a warm welcome to spring with an evening of uplifting choral music as South Oxfordshire Choir presents a concert of anthems for the new season, featuring George Dyson’s radiant Hierusalem. The concert takes place on Saturday 21 March at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Church, Wallingford.
The Choir will be joined by soprano soloist Margaret Lingas, an Oxford-based singer who performs regularly as a soloist and consort singer across the UK, Europe and North America. The concert will be conducted by the Choir’s music director Crawford Robotham, with Anne Light at the piano.

Now that we are well into the new term, I thought you might want to jot our 2026 concert dates down in your diary:

1. Dyson’s Hierusalem, along with a selection of pieces loosely themed around Spring / new life, on Saturday 21 March, 7.30pm at St Mary-le-More, Wallingford.

2. Vivaldi’s Gloria (+) on Saturday 18 July, 7.30 pm at St Mary’s Church in Cholsey - part of Cholsey's music festival.

3. Bunkfest weekend in Wallingford - either 5th or 6th September. Details still TBC.

4. Works by a collection of women's composers on Saturday 21st November.

Just a reminder to current members of South Oxfordshire Choir and others interested in trying us out, that our first rehearsal of the year is Monday 12th January. We're meeting up at St. Mary's Church in in central Wallingford, and beginning at 8pm as usual.

Monday 8th December will be the end of South Oxfordshire Choir's autumn term and we'll celebrating the close of what has been a special anniversary year with a drink and some nibbles in St. Mary's Church (Members don't forget the snacks!).

We begin rehearsals once again on Monday 12th January - when all newcomers are welcome (8pm St. Mary's Church, Wallingford) and when we'll be starting afresh rehearsing Dyson's 'Hierusalem' and some other pieces.

But for this coming Monday (8th), we're going to be brushing up our carol singing, ready for entertaining the Christmas Market shoppers in the church on the morning of Saturday 13th December.
