Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 9th September, at 1:30pm in
St. Mary’s Church, Wallingford.

Come and find out what we have been up to since the last AGM. There will be tea and cake, and an opportunity to chat informally to the committee and MIGWAL members.

This meeting is open to the public but only registered members can vote on matters.

This is to protect anyone who may be immunocompromised or otherwise vulnerable to infectious illness, thank you.

We are always open to new members. You can find us (and sign-up information) on Facebook – www.facebook.com/accessiblewallingford. If you do not have email, you can pick up a ‘New Member Sign Up Form’ at the Town Information Centre or Wallingford Library.

Access Information

When you arrive, please make your way to the opposite side of the church from the entrance. We will be using the South Aisle only for our meeting. An accessible toilet is available. There is limited ability to ventilate the space, so please feel welcome to wear a mask if you are vulnerable to infectious illness. Space for those wishing to sit socially distanced will be provided. If you have specific access needs, please contact us on [email protected] and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Please support this petition for an active travel route between Benson and Cholsey (which would take in Wallingford). It would mean a safer route for pedestrians on wheels as well as people riding adaptive cycles.

We, the undersigned, call on Oxfordshire County Council to urgently prioritize and fund the delivery of a high-quality active travel corridor connecting Benson to Cholsey Rail Station, with a direct spur to Wallingford School.

At Cabinet tomorrow Oxfordshire County Council will be voting on three proposed changes to the Adult Social Care Charging policy. Unlimited think the proposals are flawed and will make disabled people worse off. Read on to see what we are doing about it.

OCC want to
1. Change how much Disability Related Expenditure (DRE) an individual can claim.
2. Increase the cost for telecare (individual alarm systems for safety)
3. Introducing a flat rate charge for transport costs (for those who get Social Care)

We know the Council have to save money. We sympathise with the difficult choices they have to make. We have serious concerns that all three proposals push cost cutting decisions onto disabled people. We are particularly worried about the changes to DRE. We think this will make disabled people (who get Social Care) worse off at a time when the cost of living is hitting all of us hard. Do you agree?

We have gone through all the Council papers for the meeting tomorrow and have picked several holes in their proposals. It is a bit long and complicated to go through here but if you want to know more get in touch and we can send you our paper. We are have sent our response to all Cabinet members (County Councillors) and one of our members is speaking at the meeting tomorrow (we get 3 minutes!).

Improvements by Benson Lock!!

Thanks to many residents' complaints after recent works at the weir and the lock, we have step free access from Wallingford. Whilst we cannot cross the lock yet, at least we are half way there!

Those of us with wheels and sticks can go and have a look around there now! And see how many boats can fit in the lock at once!

It's Changing Places Awareness Day! In case you didn't know, a changing places toilet is an accessible toilet that includes extra space, a changing bench, overhead tracking hoist and transfer space on both sides of the toilet. For those who cannot access regular accessible toilets, they are essential. We are lucky to have two in Wallingford: one at the riverside and one in Cattlemarket car park.

Good news!

A rare bit of good news to start your Wednesday.

After a seven-year campaign, the Government has finally agreed to raise the accessibility standard for all new homes being built in England.

Currently, the standard is just 'visitable' – basically, can a wheelchair user get through the front door? The new rules will make homes genuinely 'accessible' and 'adaptable'. This means things like wider doorways, ground-floor toilets, and reinforced bathroom walls for future grab rails.

This is a massive win for the disability rights movement. 7 years of campaigning for a basic right – a home you can actually live in.

This, along with the £723 million Disabled Facilities Grant announced for home adaptations, shows that things can change when we push hard enough.

When we say ‘disabled people’, we include neurodivergent people (for example, autistic, ADHD, dyslexic), people with mental health conditions, chronic illness, learning disabilities, sensory and physical impairments.

We want to hear from all of you.

The world is full of barriers for disabled people, because society isn't designed with everyone in mind. Those barriers can take away things that everyone deserves - freedom, confidence, opportunity.
