Tackley Heath pond is at least 250 years old according to maps dating back to the 1800s.

In just the last 20 years the decline in wildlife in and around the pond has been staggering.

In a survey recently a species listed as vulnerable to extinction on the 2025 Great Britain vascular plant red list, Bladder Sedge, has been found within the pond.

Tackley Parish Council have been awarded a grant to restore the pond and with the help of Adam Bows of OxEcology will sensitively manage the pond back to it's former glory.

🌿 Funding nature-based solutions in Oxfordshire

Through our Local Environment Fund, we are supporting practical, locally led projects that tackle both the climate and nature crises.

One key focus is peat creation and fen restoration – helping to rebuild habitats that store carbon, support wildlife, and improve water management across the county.

By funding this work, we’re helping to:

✅ Restore and create peat-forming habitats
✅ Bring degraded fens back into good condition
✅ Support land managers to deliver lasting environmental benefits
✅ Strengthen local climate action

🌿 Big changes for nature on council land in Oxfordshire 🌿

Local councils are strengthening their approach to nature recovery on the land they manage. This is creating new opportunities to restore habitats, support wildlife, and improve green spaces for communities on Council land.

This reflects a wider county commitment to reversing biodiversity loss and delivering the Oxfordshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy, helping create a more connected and resilient landscape.

💡 What does this mean for you?

There are growing opportunities for not-for-profits, community groups, and local organisations to deliver projects that enhance nature locally.

✅ Habitat restoration
✅ Species recovery
✅ Community-led nature projects

1st June sees the launch of a new Species Recovery Fund from TOE.

Funded by Oxfordshire County Council, this fund responds to the launch of Oxfordshire’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy (OLNRS) - a shared, evidence-based plan to restore habitats, support biodiversity, and strengthen the county’s resilience to climate change and flooding.

The fund aims to fund projects which are targetting one or more of the priority species listed in the OLNRS and will fund projects at different stages, from early ideas through to established programmes.

For more information, guidance notes and application forms see our Species Recovery Fund webpage at https://trustforoxfordshire.org.uk/grants/species-recovery-grants/.

The focus of TOE's Local Environment Fund is two-fold.

First, to create and enhance wildlife habitats helping to recover vulnerable species and second, to improve local green spaces and the accessibility and quality of the rights of way network.

Whether it’s a project for access to nature or for habitat recovery, all the projects that we award grants to have the community at their heart.

Read about two of TOE's recent access to nature grants. One funded by Grundon Waste Management Ltd through the Landfill Community Fund and the other by South Oxfordshire District Council Community Infrastructure Levy.

The curlews of the Upper Thames would like to thank all the public and match funders who supported the Wild Oxfordshire crowdfunder at the end of 2025 raising more than £50k to support the organisations and volunteers to protect curlew nests during the breeding season.

The season is in full flow so please do stay clear if you see any fencing in fields - curlews are easily spooked and will abandon their nests.

The volunteers are out in force searching for these elusive birds who like to nest in very long grass ! Thanks too to all the farmers who are making changes to their land management to help these wading birds to breed.

🌿 Species survey season is here! 🦇🐭🦋

We’re heading into survey season - have you got your equipment sorted yet?

TOE offers a small amount of funding each year to help community groups buy species recording equipment. This includes bat detectors, moth traps, mammal traps, riverfly monitoring kits and more.

We know that species recording doesn’t always happen regularly - some groups survey monthly, while others might only do so once a year. To help as many organisations as possible get involved, TVERC (Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre) runs an equipment library where communities can borrow kit and identification books when needed.

In addition, local groups share their equipment. For example, Keep Nethercote Rural recently made three Mostela boxes (camera traps for small mammals) and one is available for other groups to borrow - perfect if you’re curious about what wildlife is in your area!

👉 If you’re planning a survey, get in touch with us or Thames Valley Environmental Records Centre to see what equipment you can borrow - https://www.tverc.org/recorders/support-recorders/equipment-and-books

👉 If you can’t find what you need, our next grant deadline is 6 July. Decisions will be made in September - in time to get you organised for the 2027 survey season!

Let’s work together to uncover and record the amazing wildlife around us 🌍🐾

In 2025-2026 TOE has awarded grants totalling more than £0.25million to local nature groups across Oxfordshire and Berkshire.

Grants were awarded to not-for-profit organisations for a huge range of community led projects which have nature recovery at their heart.

Some of our favourite grant awards last year included a donation to a crowdfunder to unlock 5 times more funding for Curlew conservation, a new breeding raft for Common Terns, protection for rare orchids and habitat creation through which there is a new circular walk for the public. You can read more about these projects and where the funding has come from at https://trustforoxfordshire.org.uk/toe-grants-over-0-25million-to-local-nature-groups-in-2025-26/.
