Wallingford WI had a lovely evening knitting and nattering over tea and cake. Such a variety of projects being created - scarves, baby blankets, a scrap-busting jacket, and two members knitting the same pattern jumper, who will finish first blue or pink?

Earlier this year we had a really interesting talk about the work of the Royal British Legion, here's an opportunity to find out how to get involved locally.

Help Shape the Future of the Royal British Legion in Wallingford

Following recent interest in reviving the Wallingford & District Royal British Legion Branch, an informal meeting has been arranged to bring together local people who would like to see the Branch continue and become more active within the community.

πŸ“… Thursday 27 August
πŸ•– 7.00pm
πŸ“ Wallingford Town Hall

The meeting will be an opportunity to share ideas about the future of the Branch, including increasing its presence at Remembrance Sunday and other commemorative occasions, supporting civic events such as Mayor's Sunday, becoming more involved in events around the town, and encouraging new members and volunteers.

You don't need to be a current Legion member or a veteran to take an interest. If you'd like to support the Royal British Legion locally and help ensure Wallingford continues to have an active Branch, you're warmly invited to come along.

Please help spread the word to anyone who may be interested.

Wallingford WI walking group had a fabulous circular walk this morning starting at The Black Horse, Checkendon. On our way, we visited the Maharajah's Well at Stoke Row, WInifred got caught in brambles and nearly got lost, then she made friends with some rather lovely sheep. There were lots of blackberries, lovely shady woods, and beautiful blue skies. Great company with lots of chat, all rounded off with excellent refreshments at the The Black Horse, Checkendon .

August's book group discussed two books: 'My Friends' by Fredrick Backman and 'Five Days in Provence' by Simon McCleave. There wasn't much enthusiasm for the first of these two books and very few had made it to the end! Most people had really enjoyed 'Five days in Provence' though. It was a very quick read but cleverly constructed and kept our interest throughout. Home made scones with jam and cream finished the evening off nicely!

At our monthly meeting last night we enjoyed an informative talk by Thames Valley Air Ambulance. We also had a surprise visit from one of the pilots, much appreciated after he'd had an extremely long day. Lots of interesting facts we didn't know about the charity, and many questions answered. What a brilliant job they do for us.

Our sub-groups (book, knit & natter, walking and coffee) continue throughout August and September, but there won't be a monthly meeting in September as we'll be busy setting up the Festival Shop for BunkFest (on the Kinecroft, open Thursday 3rd September - Sunday 6th September). Come and see us to buy BunkFest programmes, tee shirts, badges, soft drinks and much more.

Wallingford WI enjoyed an evening of Aunt Sally and Morris dancing at the Cross Keys Wallingford last night. None of us had played Aunt Sally before, and it was much harder than imagined 🀣 Unbelievably the match ended up a draw with 53 each! Thanks to Charlie who did the sticking up, and to landlord Dave for hosting us, we'll definitely be back. To top the evening off Wallingford Morris and Icknield Way Morris Men danced to celebrate a year since the formation of Wallingford Morris. Congratulations to Wallingford, great to have a local side. We look forward to seeing both sides perform at BunkFest in September.

After our regular last Saturday of the month coffee, Wallingford WI went to the Mikron Theatre Company production of Top of the Wold this afternoon, and WInifred was very naughty and became part of the set for the whole play. It was great to see Tyseley, Mikron's 90 year old narrowboat travel up the river while the play was in full flow and the audience all waved to her. Both the Mikron plays are brilliant this year, and if you missed them at Wallingford you can catch up with them in Goring tonight and Long Wittenham on Tuesday. We do hope Mikron will return to Wallingford next season. 🎭 🌞

Another busy WI week. Committee on Monday, Knit and Nattter on Wednesday, and a fabulous evening walk on Thursday. We walked 4.6 miles, Crowmarsh to The Springs Golf Club where we stopped for refreshment. Lovely evening, great company as always, lots of chat and a beautiful sunset, perfect πŸ‘Œ
