Great to welcome Steve from Turning Point to Wakefield Community Fridge today. đź’š

Steve and his colleagues will be working with us to provide a weekly Wednesday outreach presence at Wakefield Community Fridge, taking turns to spend time at our sessions and connect with the community.

September will mainly be about getting to know Wakefield Community Fridge, meeting our volunteers and service users, and helping people become familiar with the support available.

The plan is for the Turning Point team to be embedded within the wider Wakefield Community Fridge team, rather than sitting separately as a visibly labelled service. That means conversations can happen naturally and discreetly, without drawing attention to anyone or creating unnecessary stigma or embarrassment.

If you do need support around drug or alcohol use, you don’t have to wait — speak to us at Wakefield Community Fridge and we can help connect you with the Turning Point team.

This is another important step in our Beyond Food approach: bringing trusted support into a familiar community setting and making it easier for people to access help when they’re ready. 🤝💚

It was a pleasure to welcome Deputy Lieutenants of West Yorkshire to Wakefield Community Fridge this morning. đź’š

Deputy Lieutenants support the Lord-Lieutenant in representing His Majesty The King across West Yorkshire, helping to recognise and celebrate the people and organisations making a positive difference in their communities.

The visit gave us a great opportunity to share the journey of Wakefield Community Fridge, the growing demand we are seeing, the impact of our volunteers and partners, and our ambition to build on food support by connecting people with wider help and opportunities.

Most importantly, we were able to show Wakefield Community Fridge in action — a welcoming community service built around dignity, access and support for anyone who needs it.

Thank you for taking the time to visit, listen and learn more about our work and our plans for the future. đź’š

A brilliant first corporate volunteering day at Wakefield Community Fridge! đź’š

On Wednesday we welcomed Liz, Sharon, Tom and Aleks from iFIT, the global fitness technology and equipment company with a base right here in Ossett, who joined us for a corporate volunteering day.

They got stuck straight in and experienced first-hand what it’s like to serve our community during a busy Wednesday morning — helping distribute food, support service users and keep everything moving throughout the session.

We’re really pleased to hear they thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and it was great for us to welcome a corporate team into Wakefield Community Fridge and give them a genuine insight into the work that happens here every week.

A special thank you also goes to our own Wakefield Community Fridge volunteers who helped manage the day so successfully. This was the first corporate volunteering day we’ve hosted, and everything ran smoothly — opening the door for more businesses and organisations to get involved with us in future.

We’re already looking forward to welcoming our next corporate volunteer team from HSBC.

If your company or business would like to support Wakefield Community Fridge — whether through corporate volunteering, food or product donations, fundraising, sponsorship or another form of support — please get in touch with us. We’d love to hear from you.

Thank you again to Liz, Sharon, Tom and Aleks for giving your time and supporting Wakefield Community Fridge. 🙌💚

When one act of kindness leads to another

We’re incredibly grateful to the team at Argos Marsh Way for reaching out to Wakefield Community Fridge after seeing the work we’ve been doing in our community.

They had a £250 charity allocation available to support a local charity and kindly chose Wakefield Community Fridge. We sent over a Sainsbury’s shopping list and we’re currently waiting for that donation to be ready.

But the story didn’t stop there…

The Marsh Way team also put us in touch with the Argos team at Ings Road, who had a separate £200 charity budget and wanted to support us after seeing the difference we’re making locally.

We sent them a list of the core items we’re most in need of and they went out and did the shopping for us at Sainsbury’s Ings Road.

Alhamdulillah, we received a fantastic selection of much-needed core food items that will go a long way towards supporting local families.

It’s genuinely heartening to see how one approach has led to support from two separate Argos stores. It shows what can happen when local businesses take the time to see what’s happening in their community and choose to get involved.

A huge thank you to both Argos teams for their generosity and support. May your kindness be rewarded abundantly.

And to everyone who continues to support Wakefield Community Fridge - thank you. Together, we can keep making a real difference for families across our community.

July was another incredibly busy month at Wakefield Community Fridge and it's all thanks to the amazing support of our community.

In July, we:
🤝🏼 Welcomed 874 visitors
🍎 Distributed an incredible 13,110 items of food

Every item shared helps reduce food waste while supporting people across our community, and none of this would be possible without the dedication and generosity of so many people.

A huge thank you to our fantastic volunteers who give their time so willingly, our local businesses who donate surplus food, our supporters, donors and everyone who contributes in any way. Whether you volunteer, donate food, make a financial contribution, or simply help spread the word, you are making a real difference.

As the number of people using the Fridge continues to grow, so does the need for ongoing support. If you're able to help, please consider making a donation or supporting us in any way you can. Every contribution, big or small, helps us continue providing this vital service to our community.

Thank you for being part of the Wakefield Community Fridge family. Together, we're reducing food waste, supporting local people, and building a stronger community.

A huge thank you to Pete & Violet from Citizens Advice (CAB) for their donation to Wakefield Community Fridge. We really appreciate their support!

We’re also delighted to share that, from September, we’ll be launching Citizens Advice drop-in clinics at Wakefield Community Fridge. This will give our visitors direct access to support with benefits, debt, housing, employment and much more. More details will follow soon.

CAB has successfully secured ÂŁ9,500 from the Government Crisis Fund to deliver this outreach service from Wakefield Community Fridge.

The best part is that these clinics won’t just benefit Wakefield Community Fridge users - we’ll also be opening them up to the wider community, ensuring even more local people can access free, professional advice and support.

Another fantastic step towards making Jamia Masjid Swafia & Wakefield Community Fridge a true community hub, connecting people not only with food, but with the wider support they need.
