Wakefield Morris Dancers Official page for Wakefield Morris Dancers These team-written dances are now collectively known as the Horbury Suite.

The team performs a style of morris dancing known as “North West” morris, originating in Lancashire in the late 19th century where teams were formed to take a central role in the annual village carnival processions. Some of the dances that Wakefield Morris perform were traditionally used in such processions in the early 20th century, but over time the team has also written dances of its own, taking their inspiration and dance names from landmarks in and around Horbury. The team colours of blue and gold are taken from the crest of Wakefield City. The men’s costume (kit) is based on a traditional dance kit from the 1890s, and consists of black clogs, yellow/gold socks, black britches, yellow/gold cummerbund, white shirt, blue sash and blue cap. The women’s kit is designed to complement the men’s in colour and to fit well into the dance style. They have used a number of different kits through the years; the current kit was designed to celebrate the millennium, and consists of black clogs, black tights, blue dress and white shirt. In the thirty years that the team has existed they have toured in France and Germany and performed at many folk festivals throughout England. We have gained a reputation for a fast and lively dance style, and are considered to be one of the best mixed north west morris sides in the country. We’re always very happy for potential new members to come to our practices to see if morris dancing could be for them. We practice on Monday evenings from 7.30 pm to 9.00 pm at Kingsway Methodist Church Hall, Ossett, though during the summer months our Monday evenings are often spent dancing at pubs in the area.

⚽ WAKEFIELD MORRIS DANCERS — 1966: COME ON ENGLAND! ⚽
In 2025, Wakefield Morris Dancers were invited to dance at Whitby Folk Week, a fantastic week-long festival celebrating folk music, dance and traditions.

For the 1960s-themed Fancy Dress Ceilidh on the Thursday evening, we decided to dress up as the legendary 1966 England World Cup team!
Complete with our very own World Cup Willie and a Jules Rimet Trophy — not the original, obviously! 🏆 — we certainly looked the part!

Now one of the children's 1966 football theme outfits has been turned into a Wakefield Morris scarecrow, for the Ossett Scarcrow Festival.

🌾 COME AND SPOT OUR SCARECROW TODAY! 🌾
She’s on display at the Ossett Scarecrow Festival & Car Show today, Saturday 26th September.

COME ON ENGLAND! ⚽🏆💙💛

🚨 IT’S AGM THIS EVENING! 🚨

The one night of the year when we swap sticks for paperwork, dancing for debating, and “where’s the next dance out?” for “any other business?” 😂

SEND HELP!! 😳 Who will be Squire by the end of the evening? Who’ll have volunteered for a job they absolutely didn’t want? Who’ll have started an argument over something nobody can remember? And who’ll be wondering why they came? 🤣

🎉 Well, this is an achievement post! 🎉

Let’s all take a moment to celebrate the fact that Matt has officially located the video button on his phone… AND successfully managed to film Celebration for the second time! 🎥👏

Please join us in congratulating him on this monumental achievement. There is hope after all Old Speckled Hen North West Morris. Next time!! 🍻😂
