West Bretton over 50s club social meeting held on 3rd June 2026 at West Bretton Village hall.

After the conclusion of club business, we enjoyed our tea, coffee and biscuits whilst taking part in a quiz afternoon put together by Jeff. He is renowned for his music quizzes and this one covered the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Jeff also included some general knowledge questions relating to these 3 decades. Much discussion and debate followed as we searched for answers. Our winners were Brenda, Sylvia, Geoff, Linda, with help from Mary, Dorothy and Cathy. Great fun for all, many thanks to Jeff for putting the quiz together and for being our quiz master.

Our next social afternoon, 1st July, also includes a general knowledge quiz compiled by our legendary quiz master Leonard.

Our June outing is a cruise and afternoon tea aboard the Teesside Princess on the 17th June.

Our July outing is to the highly regarded Scampston Hall and walled garden near Malton, which has featured on Monty Dons Great British Gardens! Anybody wishing to go, please put your name forward and pay at our July social afternoon.

We all thank Esther and Mary for organising the social meeting and thank Esther for the write up.

West Bretton over 50s club outing to Chester on 20th May 2026.
31 of our members came on our outing to Chester. I took circa 2 hours, weather overcast but rain managed to keep off. Most made their way to the Cathedral for refreshments, before looking round. There was an exhibition similar to the one at Beverley Minster (i.e. tapestries on inner walls). Admired the stain glass windows also lit a candle to loved ones no longer here. They now have a new market hall. With eateries from different countries. With a large space to eat your choice of meals. Then popped into information office next door. Where you could book guided walks and tours around the city. We then made our way through the park. Seeing grey squirrels on the way to the river Dee where we sat watching the river cruise boats. We then climbed up onto the famous wall round the City, saw the old steam baths and Amphitheatre on the way round got off by the famous clock, time for an ice-cream. Then a cup of tea, back on coach at 4:30pm back in West Bretton at 6:30pm.
Our next social afternoon is on Wednesday June 3rd at 1pm at West Bretton Village Hall.
Thanks to Geoff for the write up. Our club’s next outing is on 17th June to Teesside for an afternoon cruise with tea and refreshment.

West Bretton over 50s club social meeting held on 6th May 2026 at West Bretton Village hall.
After the conclusion of club business, we had an interesting and informative talk from Mr Eric Jackson on the subject of the “Pontefract Murders”.
The subject may sound grisly but as the murders happened many, many years ago, it was interesting to note how the police investigated the murder compared with modern policing methods. The talk was accompanied by slides and was professionally presented.
Many thanks to Mr Jackson from all the club members.
We all thank Esther, Mary and Val for organising the social meeting and thank Esther for the write up.

West Bretton over 50s club social meeting held at Wetherby Whaler Fish restaurant on 1st April 2026 to celebrate our 50th Anniversary.
Club members came together to celebrate 50 years of the club at the Wetherby whaler in Wakefield on 1.4.26. Members enjoyed lunch, socialising with other club members and remembering the past. A beautiful celebration cake was made by one of our members Margo Osbourne, and was cut by Jean Bowers, who has been a member of the club for many years and also served as the clubs chairman. Many thanks to Margo.
Val Tamminen Jackson organised a quiz with questions relating to the 1970’s when the club was formed. This was a lovely reminder of times past. A big thank you to Val and congratulations to the winners.
A vote was held to determine the destination for our May outing and we shall be going to Chester on 20th May. A lovely place to visit with something for everyone from the cathedral, canal side walks, the Roman remains, the largely intact city walls, museums, places to eat and refresh and plenty of retail establishments to peruse.
The next club meeting is on 6th May at West Bretton village hall where money will be collected for our Chester outing, plus payment for the afternoon tea and Teeside cruise, our outing in June.
We all thank Esther, Mary and Val for organising the social meeting and thank Esther for the write up.

West Bretton over 50s club outing to Knaresborough on 15th April 2026.
A disappointing turnout for our outing to Knaresborough; only 22 people on coach, due to other commitments and illness. Need around 31 on board to break even, cost rising on coach travel in June due to tensions in the Middle East. We arrived at 10:30 am most of us went for a coffee and a scone. There was a lively market in the square with some good offers. We then walked to the Castle ruins with a lovely view over the river and viaduct. We then walked down a winding path to the river where we sat on a bench. It was then time for lunch at Worlds End public house. I did not know if anyone visited Mother Shiptons Cave and petrified well. I think they were petrified by the entrance price asked. None of our members were seen rowing on the river. Then back to the market place for an ice cream and to sit on a seat with Blind Jack and Mother Shipton statues (local heroes). We left at 4pm when it started to rain. Back in West Bretton at 5pm. I think most members enjoyed their day out.
Our next social afternoon is on Wednesday May 6th at 1pm.
Thanks to Geoff for the write up. Our club’s next outing is on 20th May to Chester.

West Bretton over 50s club outing to Beverley on 11th March 2026.

This was our first outing of the year. Enough members and guests on board to break even on the coach hire. We were delayed for ¾ hour waiting for a replacement coach due to a mechanical fault. We arrived in Beverley at 11:30 am with plenty of time to spare. The only problem was a bitterly cold wind. Beverley has a good range of shops and mostly open not like Wakefield mostly closed. Most of us headed for a coffee then a visit to Beverley Minster (see photo) which has free entrance not like York. A lovely exhibition (Threads - Tapestry Exhibition) of the last supper and resurrection on the inner walls. Some time was spent in this lovely building. Then it was time for lunch and shopping and coffee before setting off home arriving back in west Bretton at 5:30pm. An enjoyable day had by all.

Our next social afternoon is on April 1st club members will be enjoying a meal at the Wetherby Whaler to celebrate our club’s 50th Anniversary.

Our club’s next outing is on 15th April to Knaresborough.
Thanks to Geoff for the write up and Esther for the photos.

West Bretton over 50s social meeting held at Bretton Village Hall on 4th March 2026.

Our club welcomed Mr Andy Ingham and his wife, both volunteers for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Andy gave us an interesting and informative talk, accompanied by photographs and short videos, about local links in West Yorkshire with the RNLI. This included the purchasing by individuals or public fundraising to provide lifeboats around the country including the Isle of Wight and on the Yorkshire coast. Andy informed us that the 4th of March was the 202nd Anniversary of the RNLI. Many thanks to Andy and Yvonne for a lovely afternoon and all their hard work.

Our first outing of the year is to Beverley on 11.3.26. Payment for the coach fare was taken at the meeting.
In April the club will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. After some discussion, members decided on a visit to the Wetherby Whaler on Denby Dale Road to celebrate the anniversary. This is instead of the social afternoon at the village hall on the 1st April.
Thirty two members attending the meeting indicated they would be meeting for the lunch. All members attending to meet at the Wetherby Whaler for 1pm on the 1st April.

The club outing in April will be visiting Knaresborough.

We all thank Esther, Mary and Val for organising the social meeting and thank Esther for the write up.

West Bretton over 50s social meeting held at Bretton Village Hall on 3rd December 2025.
Thirty nine members of our club attended our Christmas Party at the Village Hall in West Bretton from 1pm till 3pm.
Members that are going to our Christmas lunch at the North Star Hotel in Flamborough on the 17th paid their £23.00 coach fare plus £23.00 for their 3 course lunch.
Due to illness Richie Brooke was not available to perform at our party, we all wish Richard a speedy recovery, so Ian Howarth stepped in at the last minute. Ian was a founding member of Black Lace and wrote many of their early songs, he has only recently returned to entertaining after a stroke, he very kindly did not charge us for his time. Ian entertained us by playing his guitar or mandolin whilst singing some well-known songs. In between songs he told us about his recent history and about how he enjoys performing as often as he can. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment and those that could do so or wanted to, had a good dance and sing along.
Food comprising of sandwiches, crisps, nibbles (cocktail sausages, chees, pineapple etc.), small cakes, mince pies, tropical trifle and raspberry trifle was served to each of the six tables of club members, see photos. In addition, red, rose or white wine or orange juice or non-alcoholic sparkling wine (Nosecco) was served by our willing helpers. Tea and coffee was served with a selection of cakes. In between courses we played pass the parcel and just before packing everything away we handed out raffle prizes.
Our Christmas party was a great success and everyone enjoyed the entertainment and food.
Our club members are very grateful to have had Mary, Lynda and Esther to organise our outings and meetings over the last 12 months we all want to say a big thank you.
Many thanks to Lynda, Mary, Roy, John, Susan, Geoff, Jannette, Esther and all other helpers for facilitating the afternoon.

West Bretton over 50s club outing to Skipton and Boundary Mills Colne on 19th November 2025.

It was a bitterly cold morning when we set off. We heard there were crashes on the M1 at M62. The coach was lovely and warm when we got on. Made our way to Skipton via Bradford and Keighley. We arrived at 11am. We had 2.5 hours there. The outdoor market was busy, some bought woolly hats, cashmere scarves and gloves to keep us warm. There was a nice cheese and scones stall which we availed ourselves of. We then went for lunch in Dales Cottage and some in the nearby fish and chip restaurant. We then left Skipton at 1.30pm for our 0.5 hour ride to Boundary Mills Colne near Burnley. By this time the weather was less cold and the sun was shining. There was plenty of Xmas gift ideas here, coats, hats, tops, shoes, slippers, Xmas cards etc. we were now getting tired feet from all the shopping so sat down for coffee/tea and mince pies. Left at 4.30pm on the motorway, back in West Bretton at 6pm. A cold day but we all enjoyed our outing. Thanks to organisers for choosing our destination.

Thanks to Geoff for the write up. Our club’s next outing is on 17th December to the North Star in Flamborough for a Xmas lunch.
