Black Horse Poets meeting
Last Thursday was our end of May BHP meeting at the Red Shed. A holiday week, so a small group, with lots of space for full discussions. And we filled every minute.
Richard K read “Regeneration”: a powerful poem of love repeating through the generations. A captivating piece, intense, sensitive, sensuous, and with Richard’s characteristic understated rhythmic delivery.
Cary’s “Poem Writing” gave a voice to a poem trying to find its way out, telling us what it needed and where it wanted to go. Amusing, serious, clever, and resonating a great deal with our personal experiences.
From a vivid memory, Richard S brought “The Pride of a Storm”, skilfully giving embodiment and personality to a storm, to go with some delightful and powerful imagery of the effects of the storm, and including the lion which gave the poem its title.
Mick’s subject in “Death in the Family” speaks to his now lost parents: a lovely, moving, cleverly constructed poem which had us sharing our personal stories. Stories in which regret featured strongly.
With no poem surfacing this month, I had a story, “Saint Arroc”, recounting the history of the patron saint of those lost in the brambles, metaphorical and physical, and promoting the importance of calling for help.
A smashing, enjoyable evening of sharing. The contributions were fascinating, the discussions wide ranging, and we took a great deal to take away and think about and inspire us.
