**PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS - GAWTHORPE MAYPOLE**
I once again extend a very warm welcome to Gawthorpe and Ossett for anyone who will be attending this year as we celebrate 152 years of the Gawthorpe Maypole Procession and Feast. Serving as Honorary President over the past year has been a tremendous honour.
One of my proudest moments was helping to lead the 151st Maypole Procession alongside civic and religious leaders, looking out at familiar faces and generations of families gathered together. It was a powerful reminder of the strength and spirit of our village.
Preparations for this year's events have been ongoing for many months, and I am continually inspired by the dedication of our Committee and volunteers. Everything we do is driven by a shared desire to preserve the traditions that make Gawthorpe unique. These celebrations are organised by the community, for the community and they thrive because of the pride people take in them.
My sincere thanks go to Gawthorpe Academy for their continued support of our Maypole Dancers. The hard work put in by children and staff, particularly Debbie Hardaker, is evident every year. Their performances on May Day Saturday and Monday evening are always highlights of the weekend.
It is 80 years this year since my mother danced the maypole as have many generations before and after her have, she will be 92 this year and will be out watching the Procession again.
It is also wonderful to see our senior citizens enjoy afternoon tea and entertainment in the Darby and Joan Hall; a simple but meaningful way of saying thank you to those who have supported these traditions for so many years.
This is made possible in part by the generosity of those who contribute to the street collection along the Procession route. Our May Queen and Maids of Honour remain at the heart of the celebrations. Leah Wilby has been a fantastic May Queen and ambassador for the village, and we thank her warmly for her commitment.
This year, we look forward to Miss Maddie Ferdinand, our May Queen Elect, and her Maids of Honour leading the Procession with pride.Gawthorpe's identity is sustained through these shared moments.
Whether you have lived here all your life, recently made your home here, or are visiting with family connections stretching back generations, I hope you feel the warmth, pride and welcome that defines our village.
With best wishes,
Duncan Smith (Honorary President)
