📢 Live in or around Wadebridge? Come to this community screening of The People's Emergency Briefing at Wadebridge Methodist Church on Wednesday 1 July.

In this powerful National Emergency Briefing film, leading UK scientists explain the climate and nature crisis. They reveal the latest evidence and what it means for food security, health, extreme weather, and the cost of living.

Afterwards take part in a conversation to reflect on the challenges we're all facing, share your response, and talk about what action we can take in our own local community.

The film is suitable for ages 16+.

👉 Entry is free, cash donations welcome on the door. Please book your free ticket at TicketTailor https://buytickets.at/camelcommunitysupportedagriculture/2246941

The film is based on the original briefing in Westminster and features a range of people's voices from across the UK, with appearances from broadcaster and environmental campaigner Chris Packham and entrepreneur Deborah Meaden.

Community screenings have already been held all over Cornwall - in Penzance, Hayle, Helston, Falmouth, Porthtowan, Chacewater, Perranporth, Lostwithiel, St Austell, Liskeard, Gunnislake, Downderry & Seaton, and Saltash.

Apart from Wadebridge, there are many more screenings to come in Cornwall - including in Tintagel on Thursday 11 June.

The combined orchard and meadow on our veg growing site at Treraven Farm is looking simply gorgeous after some welcome rain.

It's bursting with buttercups, sorrel, yellow rattle, red campion, stitchwort, wild geraniums, lady's smock (cuckoo flower), and lots of different grasses.

The Wadebridge Beekeepers Association bee hives in the corner are buzzing with activity and the number of native pollinators is increasing every day.

We mow a path round the perimeter so our growers and volunteers can walk around while absorbing the sights and sounds of nature.

The meadow will be cut once the grasses and flowers have died down in late summer. We will rake up the mowings to make a moisture-rich mulch for the fruit trees in the orchard.

It's such a relief to be veg growing again in lower temperatures. The searing heat earlier in the week made it almost impossible to work in the polytunnels.

Fortunately the weather cooled down for the regular volunteer sessions on Thursday and Friday, and the growing team worked hard to make up for lost time.

Tasks included:
🌿 Potting up young basil plants
🥦 Harvesting calabrese, chard and parsley
🌿 Preparing growing beds to plant beans
🌽 Planting out sweetcorn and squash
🌿 Tidying the beds of salad leaves
🫜 Sowing more radishes
💦 Watering the polytunnels and cutting grass

All completed while the swallows swooped over our heads in and out of their nest under the eaves of the packing shed!

At long last we have running water at the packing shed on our field at Treraven Farm!

🪏 A hard-working gang spent hours digging a long trench, laying pipes, shovelling gravel into the soakaway, backfilling all the soil, and replacing the turf.

Huge thanks to everyone who completed this backbreaking and painstaking work - digger driver John Uglow, volunteer plumber Graham Clipsham, new volunteer Sarah Grant, and Camel CSA coordinator Ve Lamond.

💦 Having a tap at the top of the field is such a luxury for us. For years, we've had to trek to the taps behind the polytunnels to get handwashing and drinking water.

In the veg boxes this week we have our own spring onions, radishes, turnips, and lots of other spring leafy stuff - spinach, pakchoi, salad leaves, chard, and broad bean tops 🌿

Plus organic Devon asparagus from Riverford Riverford and traditional Cornish spuds from Colwith Farm Potatoes and Farm Shop.

Meet Katie who's doing her work experience with us on our community veg growing site at Treraven Farm, Wadebridge.

She's studying for a BSc degree in Horticulture (Plant Science) at the Cornwall College University Centre at the Eden Project.

Katie will be working alongside our growers as a member of the volunteer team all through the summer. She's particularly interested in community growing.

Our three paid growers are always happy to share their knowledge and expertise with anyone working with us.

The volunteers are learning all about sowing, growing and harvesting more than 50 different varieties of vegetables in harmony with wildlife and nature.

They're making the most of the recent dry, sunny weather to get all sorts of spring tasks completed.

Do join us! Volunteers are welcome every Thursday morning. Find out more here: https://camel-csa.org.uk/volunteer/

Locally-grown oyster mushrooms from Mushlove Cornwall near Newquay head the list of seasonal vegetables in our veg bags this week.

We're now into the 'hungry gap', when winter crops are almost finished and the new season's outdoor plantings aren't yet ready to harvest.

Instead our resourceful growers have plenty of spring vegetables coming on in the shelter of our four large polytunnels to help fill this annual gap.

In the veg bags this week: oyster mushrooms, rainbow chard, carrots, radishes, rhubarb, mixed salad leaves, sprouting broccoli, leeks, sprouted fenugreek seeds + cabbage from Restharrowfarm in Trebetherick and traditional Cornish spuds from Colwith Farm Potatoes and Farm Shop.

Like to get your hands on our freshly-harvested produce grown to organic principles without harmful chemicals or sprays? We deliver every Friday via electric van to your home, workplace, or convenient pick-up point.

Our pickers and packers dealt with an abundance of healthy succulent spinach this week as we stripped the growing beds to make way for more than 100 tomato plants.

The winter crops are almost all finished as we enter the hungry gap - the leaner months before the summer vegetables are ready to harvest.

🫜 So we're really grateful to have our own seasonal spinach, radishes, salad leaves, rhubarb and rainbow chard in our veg bags.

All these spring crops, apart from the rhubarb, are growing in our polytunnels at Treraven Farm where they're protected from the wind and rain.

Also in the weekly veg bags: purple sprouting broccoli, celery, carrots, and parsnips from Riverford, and Cornish spuds from Colwith Farm Potatoes and Farm Shop.

Like what you see? 📌 Sign up at https://camel-csa.org.uk for a four-week trial of freshly-harvested veg grown to organic principles. We use no chemical fertilisers or harmful sprays.

We deliver to home, work, or convenient pick-up point every Friday via electric van.

Our growers and volunteers showed great team work to get the veg bags out ahead of the Easter holiday.

🐝 Everyone worked extra hard and fast to harvest, prep and weigh the veg for delivery in record time.

In this week's bags there are leeks, a huge lettuce, purple sprouting broccoli, foraged wild garlic leaves, kale, oriental stir fry mix, swedes, and elephant garlic. Also a 'stonehead' cabbage from Restharrowfarm, Trebetherick, and Cornish spuds from Colwith Farm Potatoes and Farm Shop.

🌿 The spring rush is well and truly underway on our community veg growing site in north Cornwall.

As we head towards the Easter break our growers and volunteers are busy carrying out loads of seasonal tasks.

Just a few of these include:
🥕 Sowing parsnip and carrot seed
🧅 Planting out onions and cauliflowers
🌱 Pricking out celery and pepper seedlings

Much of the planting out is being done with the addition of biochar. We inoculate it with beneficial microorganisms before mixing with compost and adding to the planting holes to encourage strong root growth.

We've also been preparing the growing beds, cutting the grass, planting early potatoes, tending the compost bins, and getting the polytunnels ready for the tomatoes 🍅

It's such great work from our large and dedicated team on the field and behind the scenes. Big thanks to all 😊
