Dear VCDA members and Voe residents,

This is the big one. The main consultation event. ‘Consultation fatigue’ is not an option. Please do your best to attend this event and let SSEN know in person and via the feedback forms what your thoughts are.

VCDA position after the petition in January has not changed. As much as our efforts are going into working productively with SSEN to try to achieve a better outcome, we still believe that cables should be hidden and buried wherever possible and that a Shetland-wide cumulative impact assessment over future industrialisation should be completed.

Please find attached the latest VCDA delegates/ SSEN meeting minutes where, for example, sincere disappointment was expressed to SSEN about their current cable overland plans down the Dale Valley. These are comments in momentum which you may wish to think about expanding on, together with your other considered views. If we work together and keep pushing, we may be able to positively influence the future.

If you have proof of historical/ archeological/ geological/ wildlife issues in the area, please use it to back up your assertions.

SSEN Transmission is to share updated plans for a number of developments at an upcoming round of consultation events

A new way of working? 😀🤞🏻

A VCDA delegates/ SSEN meeting was held in Voe Hall at 11am on 19th May 2026. This was the first official meeting since the VCDA decided upon a delegation to represent the community with SSEN/ pylons (post petition). The VCDA delegation consists of 5 VCDA members. Warm thanks to them all for their Voe community representation, time and efforts going forward.

We delegates see ourselves as representatives of the Voe community who are the main conduit between SSEN and the community. In other words, any concerns the community have with regards this project can be brought to the VCDA delegates and we will put them to SSEN if the community members choose. It is recognised that if we have community representation, then we are much more likely to be able to positively influence SSEN in this ‘Kergord 2 + AC Connections’ project.

VCDA delegates felt that this meeting with SSEN went as positively as it could have. There was a real sense that SSEN were grateful for the early feedback, that they were delighted that we wish to engage positively with them and an understanding that we wish to represent the community as best we can. They were extremely receptive to our petition and stated that the strength of feeling indicated by that document has already changed the future. Details of these changes will come out in time (likely end of June with the next consultation) but we have not been party to them yet.

There was a strong sense that SSEN has many shared interests and wishes to do their absolute best for us but obviously within the constraints of common sense, justifiable budgets, OFGEM dictats, government legislation/ policy etc. At every stage, SSEN took the opportunity to emphasise that they wish to be realistic, honest, communicative and receptive. Feedback is and will remain of the utmost importance to them. They wish to leave as positive a legacy as they can.
This is also the aim of this VCDA delegation. If we can work proactively, realistically, assertively and in an amiable manner, then the whole project will hopefully be an example of how communities can work with large corporations/ entities, resulting in a more positive outcome for all than would have been the case otherwise.

(Membership entails no obligation but will mean that you are part of the community discussion and will have a say if you choose).

Next SSEN consultation will be on 30th June in the Voe Hall. They will be presenting detailed plans.
