A petition with more than 1,600 signatures urging energy company SSEN Transmission to carry out any future development in Shetland responsibly and with โ€œgenuine respectโ€ for people, communities and the environment has been handed in.
The 1,623 signatories want the company to bury all transmission cables rather than erecting large pylons to connect infrastructure planned as part of the energy transition.

We need your help. As you may have seen in the local news, SSE are proposing to build two lines of 28 metre tall pylons running north from Kergord. This is to connect the converter station at Kergord with the proposed big new substation at Voe.

There is a strong feeling in the community that SSE should bury the cables rather than blighting the landscape with pylons and TWWCC have said this in our response to the consultation. However, the only way that these plans will change is if lots and lots of people email SSE and tell them that the cables should be buried. It will be Ofgemโ€™s decision, not SSEโ€™s, but the only way that Ofgem will approve the more expensive option, i.e. burying them, is if SSE receive lots of objections.

If you agree that the cables should be buried, then please email SSE at [email protected] to tell them. Please include โ€œKergord to Northern Hub Connection feedbackโ€ in the subject line. If it is any help, this is what TWWCC said in its submission:

โ€œTingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale Community Council strongly objects to the proposed overhead lines north of Kergord. A large number of energy developments are being proposed for Shetland, which have the potential to fundamentally alter the landscape that makes Shetland such a special place. SSEN have already done immense damage to the visual landscape in our area - you only have to drive through Tingwall to see the forest of poles that have been erected there. Shetlandโ€™s landscape must not be sacrificed in a drive to turn us into an industrial energy park. TWWCC has spoken to many people about these plans and the overwhelming response from the community is that the cables should be buried.โ€

If you would like to see more information about what is being proposed, then you can find it here:
https://www.3dwtech.co.uk/dashboard/ssen/shetland-ac-connections-kergord-2/exhibition-en/

There is also a petition about the proposed developments that can be signed in several of the local shops. In our area, the petition can be signed at both the Whiteness and Weisdale shops and at Shetland Jewellery.

Responses need to be in to SSE by 8th January. Please share this post if you can.

With regards the petition that VCDA are putting in to SSEN on behalf of the community, we need volunteers to do door-to-door Brae to Scatsta to get more signatures. This petition is going to be handed over before 8th January 2026.

You will need to co-ordinate yourselves (I will establish a group email to put you in touch with each other). I would suggest between 2nd and 5th Jan would be the time to get knocking with this.

Please email me if you are willing and able: [email protected]

Thanks

We are absolutely delighted to see the signs being changed to 40mph on the main road through Voe! ๐ŸŽ‰ ๐ŸŽ‰ ๐ŸŽ‰

Back in February 2023, members of the community came together to fight to get the speed limit reduced through Voe, and out of that meeting came the Voe Community Development Association.

Since then we have been busy working with the Voe Hall raising funds for the Defib located at Tagon Stores; we got funding from the Scottish Land Fund to undertake a feasibility study for the Voe Sail Loft; weโ€™re looking to improve the path through the trees at the Loch of Voe working with the Shetland Amenity Trust and the Shetland Islands Council; and more recently weโ€™ve launched a petition regarding the proposed โ€œKergord 2โ€ Substation and associated transmission infrastructure.
