We need your help. As you may have seen in the local news, SSE are proposing to build two lines of 28 metre tall pylons running north from Kergord. This is to connect the converter station at Kergord with the proposed big new substation at Voe.
There is a strong feeling in the community that SSE should bury the cables rather than blighting the landscape with pylons and TWWCC have said this in our response to the consultation. However, the only way that these plans will change is if lots and lots of people email SSE and tell them that the cables should be buried. It will be Ofgemโs decision, not SSEโs, but the only way that Ofgem will approve the more expensive option, i.e. burying them, is if SSE receive lots of objections.
If you agree that the cables should be buried, then please email SSE at [email protected] to tell them. Please include โKergord to Northern Hub Connection feedbackโ in the subject line. If it is any help, this is what TWWCC said in its submission:
โTingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale Community Council strongly objects to the proposed overhead lines north of Kergord. A large number of energy developments are being proposed for Shetland, which have the potential to fundamentally alter the landscape that makes Shetland such a special place. SSEN have already done immense damage to the visual landscape in our area - you only have to drive through Tingwall to see the forest of poles that have been erected there. Shetlandโs landscape must not be sacrificed in a drive to turn us into an industrial energy park. TWWCC has spoken to many people about these plans and the overwhelming response from the community is that the cables should be buried.โ
If you would like to see more information about what is being proposed, then you can find it here:

There is also a petition about the proposed developments that can be signed in several of the local shops. In our area, the petition can be signed at both the Whiteness and Weisdale shops and at Shetland Jewellery.
Responses need to be in to SSE by 8th January. Please share this post if you can.
