πΈ Uttoxeter WI - May Meeting πΈ
Our May Meeting was different from the usual when two of our members compared their early lives. Ingrid and Sue were born a few months apart, but their early lives were totally different.
Ingrid was born in London, which was still suffering from the effects of World War II, with bomb sites and a shortage of housing. We were all shocked to hear how her German mother, who had come to England to train as a nurse, was verbally abused by people and someone even threw a lighted cigarette into Ingrid's pram. Ingrid moved a number of times in her early years due to the housing shortage, and she travelled across London on different buses to get to school - at one time on the same bus as Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson.
On the other hand, Sue was born and brought up on a farm near to Abbots Bromley - where she was involved in helping to look after the animals from a young age - travelling on one bus into Uttoxeter to Oldfields Hall when it was the Girls School.
The members really enjoyed both talks and the insight into the differences in their lives - thank you both very much for interesting and moving talks.
