When you think of skills training, a Welsh pony probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind.
But at Glascoed Hwb in Monmouthshire, a Welsh pony is helping people build confidence, learn new skills and improve their wellbeing.
The idea started when the team at Glascoed Hwb spotted a gap. There weren't many opportunities locally for adults with learning disabilities to gain practical skills in a supportive environment.
So, they decided to do something about it.
Working with GAVO's Rural Community Development Officer, they developed an idea that would eventually become the Monkswood Skills Centre project, where people can learn through hands-on experiences.
Today, the project includes three exciting areas: horticulture, hospitality and Pony Life.
Participants learn how to care for a Welsh Section A pony, an at-risk native breed, while developing confidence, social skills and a sense of responsibility along the way.
With support from GAVO, Glascoed Hwb also secured funding for a pilot pony therapy programme. Despite a few delays caused by waterlogged fields, the project is now up and running, and the early signs are really positive.
Throughout that journey, GAVO's Rural Community Development Officer has been there to provide support, guidance and connections to help turn ideas into reality. From setting up as a Community Interest Company and developing new ideas, to securing funding, building partnerships and launching new programmes, Glascoed Hwb has continued to grow its vision for the community.
