REGULAR READERS will know that we’ve previously covered the sad demise of Denby Pottery who’re based in Denby, Derbyshire, England. You can read our report here: https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1275650758088818&set=a.241167498203821

However, it now appears that there may be light at the end of the tunnel. If reports are to be believed, well-known discount retailers Home Bargains are interested in acquiring the Denby brand.

Exact details relating to the possible takeover are sketchy. However, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that Denby – which was founded more than 200 years ago – can be saved & remain in British hands. Hopefully, any takeover will also protect as many local jobs as possible.

With the above in mind, it’s even more important than ever for UK shoppers to support British companies.

We know that we’ve said this before, but it’s well worth repeating. Buying British is important. Here’s why:

• Supports the UK economy and jobs: Purchasing British-made goods directly invests in local manufacturers, sustains employment across sectors (from skilled trades to support roles), and helps keep money circulating within the British economy rather than flowing abroad.

• Reduces carbon footprint and environmental impact: British products typically travel much shorter distances from production to consumer, lowering transport-related CO₂ emissions compared to imported goods. This contributes to sustainability and helps combat climate change.

• Higher quality and safety standards: UK manufacturers generally adhere to strict British and EU-derived regulations for quality, safety, and reliability. This often results in more durable, trustworthy products with better consumer protections.

• Ethical production and traceability: British goods often involve higher labour, animal welfare, and environmental standards (such as UK pig farming and meat traceability rules). Buying British supports ethical sourcing and reduces risks associated with opaque global supply chains.

• Preserves skills, innovation, and industries: It helps maintain traditional manufacturing expertise, encourages investment in British businesses, and supports sectors like advanced engineering, food, and design that might otherwise decline.

• Boosts local communities and supply chains: Spending stays in the UK, enabling businesses to invest in each other, strengthen rural and regional economies, and build greater resilience against global disruptions.

• National resilience and security: Reducing reliance on distant imports can improve supply chain security for critical or everyday goods, especially during geopolitical tensions or global events.

IF YOU love blue cheese – and in particular traditional Blue Stilton and Shropshire Blue cheeses - Colston Bassett Dairy are the people for you.

With over one hundred years of experience, they certainly know what they’re doing. Here, cheeses are created by a highly skilled and dedicated team of cheesemakers still using original recipes handed down through generations.

HAND MADE

Milk is supplied daily from farms only 15 miles away. Consisting of only five ingredients, the cheese is made by hand.

The Colston Bassett Dairy has gained a envious reputation – gaining many awards in the process - built on producing artisanal, hand-made, high-quality cheese.

BUYING

Cheeses can be bought directly from their farm shop or from an extensive string of suppliers (including the well-known Neal’s Yard Dairy in London).

20/05/26 - COUNTER CULTURE – MIDWEEK SONG LIST (150)

WELCOME to the 150th issue of the Midweek Song List! As usual, we’ve got a real mixed bag of artists & genres.

Artists include Blondie, Modern Lovers, Social Distortion & The Who. Genres include Bluegrass, Glam Rock, New Wave & Punk. We’ve also got an interesting blast from the past. Hopefully, this’ll satisfy as many of you as possible!

Regulars will know that we’ve been marking the centenary of the 1926 UK General Strike by featuring original (& cover versions of) pro-union songs. Today we have a cover of ‘Worker’s Song’ (originally released by the Dropkick Murphys on their 2003 album, ‘Blackout’).

Our brief features on Glam Rock have generated some interest. This week we have ‘Ball Park Incident’ which was a hit for Wizzard in 1972. The band was formed by Roy Wood (who’d previously been a co-founding member of the Move & the Electric Light Orchestra).

Roy Wood & Wizzard seemed to embrace Glam with a vengeance – particularly in the makeup & clothes department. For us, ‘Ball Park Incident’ seems to sum up the joyous nature of Glam.

Our blast from the past is ‘Everyday Hurts’ by Sad Café. It was released in 1979 & remains one of the most laid back - yet emotional - tracks that we’ve ever come across. As an aside, we were astounded to discover that Sad Café were still on the go – check out their website: https://www.sadcafe.co.uk

We mentioned earlier that this is our 150th issue. As such, we’re going to reward ourselves with a short break! If all goes according to plan, the next Midweek Song List will be back on Wednesday 6th June.

We end with a question. We believe that the artist known as Anonymous Ulster is gaining an excellent reputation for his thoughtful and positive portrayal of his nation & people. Do you know of others – based in the British Isles - who do the same?

• READERS OF the Midweek Song List may be interested to know that Counter Culture produces two other regular features.

The first is ‘Culture Vulture’ which is our weekly entertainment guide. This long-running feature is available in audio-visual & text form. You can find it here on our page or on our website https://countercultureuk.com

The second – ‘Arts, Culture, History & Sport - is a more recent feature. It currently appears (on this page) on an ad hoc basis, but we hope to make it weekly in due course. You can find the most recent issue (dated 30th April) here: https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1621603023304949&set=a.262440725887859

We’ve also started to just produce Songlist Specials. The first one –
https://countercultureuk.com/2026/05/15/songlist-special-songs-that-captured-the-spirit-of-the-old-grey-whistle-test - featured tracks from the Old Grey Whistle Test, arguably TVs most influential music programme of all time.

AFTER YEARS of testing, Lister’s Crisps found the perfect potato varieties that met their needs. These potato seeds are selected from Grade 1 Land in Yorkshire. Exceptional soil fertility & great drainage lend themselves to creating the perfect conditions for cultivating the finest potatoes.

These varieties include Lady Rosetta – which are harvested in early summer - and Opal and Marquis – harvested in the autumn - which ensures a steady supply of crisps all year round.

HAND-CRAFTED

Once harvested, the potatoes are hand-crafted into crisps. Even the seasoning is done by hand (which came as a surprise to us).

Small batch production allows the company to carefully monitor the production process.

Lister’s Crisps produce six different flavours of crisp (in 40g and 150g share bags). They are:

• Lightly Sea Salted

• Cheddar Cheese & Onion

• Steak, Ale & Caramelised Onion

• Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar

• Sweet Chilli

• Prawn Cocktail

INDEPENDENT

The company is extremely proud to be an independent family business. So much so, it appears that they don’t deal with massive supermarket chains (which allows them to focus on delivering the highest level of service to their customers with quality crisps to match).

TONY MORGAN is the man behind Morgan Leather. He started working with leather in 2009 when he first made a tool sheath. Since then, he has expanded & now (in addition to tool sheathes) produces the following items in leather:

• Bags,

• Belts,

• Notebooks,

• Wallets,

• Phone Cases

All items are hand stitched. Looking at the pictures on his website - https://morganleather.co.uk - it’s clear that the attention to detail is second to none.

In fact, Tony is so confident in his workmanship that he states the ‘products I make are high quality that will last a lifetime, if looked after, so you only pay once!’

CONFIDENT

(In fact, he’s so confident in the durability of his leather products that he offers a free repair service. This is something you don’t see very often!)

We also admired his honesty when admits that his products can be bought cheaper elsewhere. However, he puts this in context by saying:

‘A cheaper bag may have been made on the other side of the world and so will have a larger carbon footprint. Or it will have been stitched on a machine, which is fundamentally much weaker and more susceptible to breaking than hand stitching. Or it’s made by adults or children who are ill-treated. You’re paying for quality, durability and fairness, and will receive something that is unique and, in some cases, custom-made just for you.’

BRITISH

Some of the leather used comes from Italy and Spain. However, he mainly works with British veg tanned cowhide (tanned using cowhide from Scotland and various leaves and barks. The tannery is based in Derbyshire.)

We were really interested to note that Tony also teaches people how to make various leather items via a series of courses he runs (details of which can be found on his website).

13/05/26 - COUNTER CULTURE – MIDWEEK SONG LIST (149)

WE’VE RECENTLY BEEN talking about how the Glam Rock scene was underrated. We’ve also featured a couple of songs – ‘Ride A White Swan’ & ‘Hot Love’ - by T. Rex which are generally thought to have kickstarted glam in the UK.

Another influential Glam band were the Sweet & here we feature their hit ‘The Ballroom Blitz.’ The band consisted of lead vocalist Brian Connolly, bassist Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott and drummer Mick Tucker.

Steve Priest - in particular – used to ham it up & like many an artist appeared to push boundaries to see what was acceptable (or not) to the Establishment.

We’ve previously marked the 100th anniversary of the UK General Strike with Billy Bragg’s version of ‘Which Side Are You On?’ The song was originally written by Florence Reece during the 1931 American coal miners’ strike in Harlan County, Kentucky. Bragg linked his version to the UK miners’ strike of 1984-1985.

(For more information about Florence Reece, click here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1590400373091881&set=pb.100063658011545.-2207520000&type=3)

We’ve since came across another version by Natalie Merchant (who’s probably best known as the former lead singer of US alternative rock band, 10,000 Maniacs). We particularly like the way her version builds in intensity as it goes on. Have a listen to it & let us know what you think.

There’s plenty of Bowie fans out there, so we’ve included his 1973 hit ‘Sorrow’ (which was a cover of a song released by the McCoys in the mid-60s).

The early 70s was Bowie’s Glam Rock era, but we think that this track ably demonstrates how soulful his voice was. We also love the saxophone on it as well.

With David Bowie still in mind, we’d encourage readers to check this link out which’ll take you to reviews of his various works: https://countercultureuk.com/?s=david+bowie

We end, as usual, with a question. The last track on this Midweek Song List is ‘With Or Without You’ by U2. But without looking it up, can anyone tell us what album did it feature on?

• Focus On Great UK Companies – 92 – Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses, Inglewhite, Lancashire, (England).

INGLEWHITE is a small village situated in rural Lancashire. And it’s here that Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses are situated.

The family-owned business - based at Wilson Fields Farm - makes some of Britain’s best-loved cheeses.

These traditionally handmade farmhouse cheeses include Lancashire, Red Leicester, Double Gloucester, Cheshire, Wensleydale & Cheddar.

BEST KNOWN

However, they’re probably best known for their Blacksticks blue cheese, which, we’ve been reliably informed, is out of this world.

The family appear to be cheese lovers – as they proudly claim to ‘eat, sleep and live cheese - it's our passion, and we like to think that we are really good at making it.’

Most of the milk used by Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses comes from the fields that surround their dairy (many of which are farmed by extended family members). Similarly, any goat's milk used comes from just down the road from their farm. Talk about Localism at its best!

CHEESE LOVERS

As cheese lovers, we found the company website - https://butlerscheeses.co.uk/ - very clear & interesting to read.

In particular, we liked the way they’d listed their cheeses under type (hard cheese, soft cheese, goats cheese and so on) and for occasions, such as parties & gatherings etc.

(Church Gresley is in Derbyshire, but the company now operates from Liverpool.)
