👻 Things That Go Bump in the Night at Little Hall… 🎃

As far as we know, Little Hall has escaped any confirmed ghostly visitations but there are certainly a few reminders of darker times scattered around the house.

Look closely at the mantelpiece above one of our main fireplaces and you’ll spot witches’ marks, protective symbols carved into the wood by people who genuinely feared evil spirits and the supernatural.

Scenes from the 1968 cult film The Witchfinder General were filmed here. The film tells a fictionalised story inspired by the notorious Matthew Hopkins, the self-styled Witchfinder General who terrorised East Anglia during the English Civil War, accusing and persecuting those suspected of witchcraft.

And then there’s our library where the life masks of the Gayer-Anderson brothers and their mother look spookily at visitors. They’re fascinating historical objects but, when the uplighters catch their faces, they look more like death masks!

We think that’s the extent of Little Hall’s ghostly goings-on but, then again, nobody lives in Little Hall these days so who knows what might be lurking in the shadows after midnight or what goes bump in the night?

Happy Halloween everyone 👻

When the Gayer-Anderson brothers arrived in Lavenham in 1924, life there was very different from how it is today.

Despite its magnificent medieval buildings and wealthy wool-trading past, the village had no sewage system, no mains water, no organised refuse collection and no electricity! Water came from wells, homes were lit by oil lamps, and household waste was simply piled up behind the house. This is all a far cry from the Lavenham we know and love today.

Yet the brothers still decided to make Little Hall in Lavenham their country home, thus beginning a remarkable new chapter in the building’s long history.

Learn about this surprising aspect of Lavenham’s history on your visit to Little Hall.

A remarkable journey home…

In 1942, after more than 30 years in Egypt, Major Robert Gayer-Anderson finally left the country he had come to love so deeply.

He had returned to care for his twin brother Thomas, whose health was failing, but on his return Robert realised that he was in a worse state of health than his brother.

Little Hall became Robert’s final home.

Following a brief and hazardous trip to Cairo to settle the fate of his house and the future of his servants, he passed way at Little Hall on 16 June 1945.

Today, Little Hall still holds reminders of the extraordinary life of the Major, a soldier, doctor, Egyptologist, collector and adventurer whose love of Egypt travelled with him all the way back to Suffolk.

A remarkable life, ending peacefully at Little Hall. ❤️
