We had a great day at the Walk for Hope at Ballynahinch Community Centre. A big thank you to everyone who came to support the event. Also, a big thank you to Ballynahinch Community Collective for organising the pre-loved sales of which the proceeds are going to our service to help fund much needed counselling sessions. The donations towards tea, coffee, scones and tray bakes etc are also for BCS. Totals raised to follow. Thank you to all the members of Ballynahinch Su***de Prevention Task Group for organising such a fantastic event.

Let's talk about depression

Saturday is World Mental Health Day. This year, we're using the day to talk openly about depression — what it is, how it shows up, and where to find support. Depression is one of the most common mental health difficulties, yet it's still often misunderstood, minimised, or hidden behind a brave face. That's why we're spending October talking about it openly — not to be heavy, but because the more we normalise these conversations, the easier it becomes for someone to reach out before things get harder.

If you or someone you know is struggling, we're here — for anyone aged 12 and over across Lisburn, Downpatrick, Bangor and Ballynahinch, in person or remotely.

SADNESS: has a clear cause · comes and goes · eases with time or comfort

DEPRESSION: persists for weeks · affects sleep, energy and appetite · can happen without an obvious reason

Everyone feels sad sometimes — it's a normal response to a difficult day or event. Depression is different. It tends to last longer, touches most areas of daily life, and doesn't always have an obvious trigger. Knowing the difference matters, because persistent low mood is worth taking seriously rather than waiting out. If this sounds familiar, it's worth talking to someone — whether that's your GP, someone you trust, or a counsellor.

This month is a big one for us — on 13th October, Ballynahinch Counselling Service turns 15! We'll be marking 15 years of supporting our community throughout the month, alongside our focus on Depression Awareness.

Across October we'll be covering: recognising the signs of depression, how it differs from ordinary sadness, how to support a loved one who's struggling, why reaching out matters, small steps for the hardest days, and the treatment options available. We'll also be marking World Mental Health Day on 10th October.

If any of this feels close to home, know that support is here — for anyone aged 12 and over across Lisburn, Downpatrick, Bangor and Ballynahinch, in person or remotely.

Follow along with us this month as we mark this milestone together.

Support is available, whenever you're ready.

We've spent September talking about routine, change, and the anxiety that can come with both. If any of it struck a chord, please know: support is available, and reaching out is a strong first step, not a last resort.

Here's to steadier days ahead.

Evidence shows us there are five steps you can take to improve your help mental health and wellbeing – one of those steps is connect. Connect with the people around you – family, friends or neighbours. Building these connections will support you and help maintain and improve your wellbeing.

Another one of those steps is keep learning. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Rediscover an old hobby or interest, or simply set a challenge you will enjoy.

If you are feeling anxious, getting outside for a walk could help. Combine your movement with mindfulness – pay attention to the sensation of walking, the rhythm of your breathing and your surroundings.

‘Take notice’ is another one of steps you can take to improve your mental health. Try to notice things you can:
• see, like a picture;
• smell, like freshly made coffee or tea;
• hear that is soothing, like bird song;
• or something enjoyable, like seeing a dog play or feeling cosy in bed. Thinking of these moments can also help calm you.
