🎭🇬🇹 Magical (and thought-provoking) moment in Antigua Guatemala witnessing the traditional Baile de la Conquista 💃🏽⛪

This “Dance of the Conquest” is one of the most powerful cultural performances in Guatemala’s living history. Dancers wear striking costumes and white-faced masks 😶‍🌫️ representing the Spanish conquistadors, while others embody the Indigenous Maya leaders and communities who lived through the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century.

Through music, choreography, and storytelling, the dance reenacts the period of conquest — a moment that reshaped the entire region. It reflects the clash of worlds: resistance, survival, loss, and the blending of cultures that followed.

What makes this tradition so fascinating is that it is not just history being remembered — it is history being performed and preserved in community spaces. Passed down through generations, it keeps memory alive in a deeply visual and emotional way 🎶🔥

Standing there in Antigua, surrounded by colonial architecture and this living performance, you really feel how layered Guatemalan identity is — beautiful, complex, and deeply rooted in resilience 🇬🇹✨

As someone connected to Mayan heritage, it’s impossible not to reflect on both the pain and strength carried through these stories.

Culture is never frozen in time here — it continues to speak.

🔥🇬🇹 Amazing visit to Maximón in Santiago Atitlán on the shores of Lake Atitlán 🌋💙

Last time I was in , was a powerful experience witnessing Mayan cosmovision up close, incense swirling through the air 🌿, candles glowing 🕯️, and traditional offerings of ci**rs 🚬 and alcohol 🥃 laid out with deep intention and respect.

Maximón is one of the most fascinating spiritual figures in Guatemala. He is a blend of Mayan ancestral beliefs and Catholic influence, often described as a folk saint or spiritual guardian. For many communities, he represents protection, fertility, justice, and the balance between light and shadow in human life.

Each year, different local cofradías (community brotherhoods) take care of his shrine, moving him from house to house. Devotees come to ask for blessings, healing, love, or guidance, always through ritual offerings that reflect both gratitude and respect. ✨

What makes him so special is not just the rituals but the living connection between spirituality, culture, and identity. It is not something “from the past”, it is alive, evolving, and deeply rooted in the community today.

As someone with Mayan heritage, experiencing this firsthand is both grounding and eye-opening. It’s a reminder of how rich, complex, and spiritual our roots truly are ❤️🌿

Lake Atitlán never stops teaching.

☕🇬🇹 Travelling through the coffee plantations of Guatemala's majestic Sierra Madre is an experience like no other! 🌄💚

Did you know that the Sierra Madre mountain range is part of the great mountain system that stretches from the Rocky Mountains in Canada all the way down to the Andes in Chile? 🌎⛰️

These volcanic highlands provide the perfect conditions for growing some of the world's finest coffee. ☕✨

🌱 What makes high-altitude coffee so special?

At higher elevations, coffee cherries ripen more slowly due to cooler temperatures. This extra time allows the beans to develop more complex sugars and flavours, resulting in a richer, sweeter, and more aromatic cup of coffee. That's why Guatemalan high-altitude coffees are loved by coffee enthusiasts around the world! ❤️☕

As I travel through these stunning landscapes, surrounded by volcanoes, lush forests, and endless coffee fields, I'm reminded why Guatemala is one of the most beautiful countries on Earth. 🇬🇹💙

Who else starts their day with a great cup of coffee? ☕🙌

🇬🇹✨ Ever wondered how a Mayan lady creates a Tocoyal? ✨🇬🇹

Last time I travelled to , in beautiful Santa Catarina Palopó on the shores of Lake Atitlán, I had the privilege of learning how to make one myself! 💙🌋

A Tocoyal is a traditional woven ribbon worn by indigenous Mayan women, carefully wrapped around the head and hair. More than just a beautiful accessory, it represents cultural identity, heritage, and centuries of tradition passed down through generations. ❤️

Watching the skill, patience, and artistry involved was truly inspiring. Every wrap tells a story and keeps Mayan culture alive for future generations. 🙌🏽

Moments like these remind me why I am so proud of my roots and why Guatemala will always have a special place in my heart. 🇬🇹💙

Have you ever seen a Tocoyal before?

♥️🇬🇹✨ GUATEMALA… a country full of colour, culture, tradition and soul ✨🇬🇹♥️

Absolutely breathtaking ❤️
Rumi’al Ajaw from the municipality of Santo Domingo Xenacoj, in the department of Sacatepéquez, Guatemala 🇬🇹

The traditional clothing and ceremonial identity of Guatemala’s Indigenous communities are far more than beautiful textiles, they are living history. Every colour, pattern and woven detail tells a story of ancestry, spirituality, nature and Mayan heritage passed down through generations. 🌿🧵✨

Sacatepéquez is one of the most culturally rich regions in Guatemala, surrounded by volcanoes, colonial history and deeply rooted Indigenous traditions that continue to keep Guatemala’s identity alive today. Seeing these traditions celebrated with such pride always fills my heart. ❤️

As a Guatemalan living in the UK, moments like this remind me how incredibly vibrant and unique our culture truly is. 🇬🇹✨

💧 Over 2,000 years ago—deep in the jungles of Guatemala—the ancient Maya built something modern science wouldn’t discover for millennia.

At the great city of Tikal, they engineered a water purification system using volcanic minerals like zeolite and quartz—materials still used in today’s filtration tech. They layered these stones in reservoirs to trap toxins and bacteria, turning muddy runoff into clean, drinkable water.

This wasn’t luck. It was science… before science had a name.

Long before plumbing or lab coats, the Maya purified their water with wisdom carved from the Earth itself.
