The Hartshill Mile.

The Hartshill mile is a long established easy walk of approximately 1.25 miles or 2 kilometers involving visits to a wonderfully diverse collection of 12 historic and modern pubs and bars situated on or very close by the old A52 Hartshill Road/George Street and Hassell Street, running from the Jolly Potters in Hartshill to the Jolly Potter in Newcastle under Lyme. The route of The Hartshill Mile essentially follows the old A52 or Rykeneld Street which was a Roman Road which ran through the northern Midlands of England from Deva (Chester) to Derventio (Derby) via what is now Stoke-on-Trent. It is not to be confused with the Icknield Street. It has in the past also been called by Victorian antiquarians the "Via Devina". The territory traversed would have been that of the Cornovii. (Source Wikipedia) It continued to be used over the centuries and in 1759 it was ‘turnpiked’, meaning toll gates were set up at intervals to pay for the upkeep of the road. It was on these major roads that most of the construction of buildings happened at the time and this was the case here. Although the first mention of Hartshill was in 1600 it was really only an inhabited area by 1738. At some point between 1770 and 1780 it is thought that the Noah’s was built which was formally known as the Noah’s Ark Inn, this was presumably to service the travellers who used the road. The others have been added as the city developed.
