Cycling UK in Scotland Enabling and inspiring more people to cycle more often in Scotland. We deliver behaviour change projects and campaign to make Scotland a better place to cycle.

Cycling UK has been delivering projects in Scotland since 2010, as well as running campaigns and influencing policy at Holyrood and locally, supporting over 4,000 members and advocating for cycling across the nation. Our projects allow more people to discover the joy of cycling, whether that's zipping about on errands, exploring the local area or finding ways improve their physical health or wellbeing. Through our funding for local organisations and delivery of projects in communities we work with over 20,000 people each year across the country.

🏆 There's still time to get your nominations in for the 2026 Cycling Champion of the Year Award.

Now in their tenth year, the awards help to celebrate those who’ve had a profound impact in supporting cycling at a local, regional or national level over the past year.

If you know someone who’s had a significant personal impact in changing the cycling landscape, you can help to celebrate their achievement by nominating them for this award.

Previous winners have included prominent cycle campaigners who have built support and influenced change, elected members that have shown leadership in introducing measures to improve cycling, and innovators that have changed the cycling landscape in Scotland.

Organised in partnership between Cycling Scotland, Cycling UK in Scotland, Scottish Cycling and Walk Wheel Cycle Trust Scotland, this year’s award celebrates an individual whose vision has helped bring the environmental, health and social benefits of travelling by bike to more people.

It takes just a few minutes to leave a nomination, so make sure to get your submission(s) in by the closing date of 22nd June:

What happens when you give families the chance to try cycling together?

At first, there was uncertainty, but now Tuesday mornings are filled with smiles, laughter and children excited for another ride around the park.

Gillian is a Family Engagement Officer with Early Years Scotland, delivering sessions at Barmulloch Community Development Centre BCDC in Glasgow. Through her role, she works closely with families, creating opportunities for connection, learning and play. With a little support from our Glasgow Connecting Communities programme, cycling has become another way to bring families together.

Some parents have even sat on a bike for the very first time. It's a reminder that sometimes all it takes is the right support, a welcoming environment and the opportunity to give something new a go.

Read Gillian's story and see how cycling is helping families connect, one ride at a time 👇

Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders isn’t “easy cycling territory”, but cycling here didn’t wait for perfect conditions and that is why it matters.

Hills that keep coming, salt air that quietly works away at bike frames like it’s got a personal vendetta. Infrastructure that’s… let’s say, still finding its rhythm.

And at the centre of it all is Louise Birkett from Sea the Change, who helped turn it into something much bigger with support from our Cycle Access Fund (backed by The Scottish Government + SEStran). The Cycle Shack now offers e-bikes, repairs, hires, rides, kids’ bikes, and much more.

Working from home as a team manager for a local council, James found himself becoming less active.

He first learned to ride at 37 (now 58), but cycling never felt natural. Over that time he only went out around 25 times, and a fall after hitting a pothole knocked his confidence further.

More recently, a decline in fitness and a GP warning about prediabetes became the turning point that made him want to change things...

So he joined our Cycling UK in Midlothian Connecting Communities programme through the ‘Couch to 10 Miles’ course at Glencorse Centre in Midlothian. With support from our amazing development officer Kirsty, he rebuilt his confidence over four weeks.

Now he rides regularly, feels more confident on the road, and has rebuilt his skills. A key milestone was cycling 13 miles to his office.

This we’re sharing stories like James’ that show what cycling can open up when the right support is in place.

Can you relate to James story? 👇
