Shiloh is entering an exciting new chapter – and you could be part of it.

For more than 30 years, we’ve been supporting adults who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Rotherham. Now, as we begin our new three-year strategy, we have ambitious plans for the future. And we’re looking for a Community Fundraiser to help us make them happen.

This is an opportunity to shape and grow community fundraising at Shiloh – developing relationships with businesses, community organisations, schools, colleges and individuals across Rotherham and South Yorkshire. We want someone who will bring ideas, energy and creativity to the role, while building the long-term relationships that are so important to our future.

MOVIE AFTERNOON AT SHILOH 🍿

Did you know that, as well as our day-to-day support, Shiloh guests can also take part in a range of free activities, courses and events?

If you are homeless – whether you’re rough sleeping, sofa surfing or living in temporary or supported accommodation – or you’re at risk of homelessness, these activities are for you.

This Thursday, 24 September, we’re having a Movie Afternoon!

We’ll be watching The Sheep Detectives 🐑 – a funny, heartwarming film following a flock of sheep who decide to solve a mystery of their own!

Why do we need to fundraise for our roof?

Since launching our ‘Help Us Weather the Storm’ appeal, we thought it might be helpful to explain a little more about why we need to raise the money.

The heavy rain in August didn’t cause the underlying problems with our roof. Instead, the volume of water exposed weaknesses in an ageing and worn roof, allowing significant amounts of water into our building.

Our insurance will cover the resulting internal water damage, and we’re continuing to work through that process. However, it will not cover the cost of repairing or replacing the roof itself because its condition is due to age and wear rather than an insured event.

Although Shiloh leases the building, under the terms of our lease we are responsible for repairs, including the roof. This means Shiloh needs to meet the cost of the roof repairs.

Our initial estimate for the affected section of roof alone is around £50,000.

And that's why we need your help.

We want to raise additional funds to get the roof fixed rather than take money away from the frontline services our guests rely on – food, practical support, staff, activities and the everyday costs of supporting people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

This isn’t really about a roof. It’s about what happens underneath it.

Every week, people come through Shiloh’s doors because they are homeless, at risk of homelessness and need somewhere safe to turn.

Under our roof, people can have a hot meal, take a shower, wash their clothes and get the practical essentials they need.

They can sit down with someone who will listen and help them work through housing problems and other challenges.

They can see a nurse, access specialist services, take part in activities, learn new skills and meet organisations that can help – all in a place where they are welcomed and treated with dignity.

And sometimes, they can simply have a cup of tea, a conversation and somewhere safe to be.

That’s what we’re trying to protect.

When we ask you to help us repair our roof, we’re really asking you to help us protect everything that happens underneath it.

Our Help Us Weather the Storm appeal will help us repair and restore our building without taking vital funds away from the support our guests rely on.

When the recent heavy rain hit, water came pouring through our roof and into our building. This video shows what we walked into.

The worst of the damage was in our dining and activity area – a space that is at the heart of Shiloh. It’s where our guests eat together, take part in activities and workshops, and where we hold our regular multi-agency drop-ins, bringing different services together under one roof.

Thankfully, Shiloh is open, and we are continuing to support our guests.
But now we need to get the roof fixed.

Many people have asked us how they can help. Right now, the most important thing you can do is support our Help Us Weather the Storm appeal.

We’re recruiting a Community Fundraiser to help build Shiloh’s network of supporters across Rotherham and South Yorkshire.
