Our flagship event is one day, but our mission is 365 days a year. 💙

We’re expanding our reach across all platforms, and we have some incredible updates on the future of our work:

🎬 'The Journey Home' Short Film: Filming kicks off next week! This awareness-raising film captures powerful, lived-experience testimonies of people entering prison, navigating release, and rebuilding their lives—highlighting the real barriers to resettlement and the support that changes lives.

🎉 Drywaves Last Dance (Dec 12th, Manchester): We are taking over a room! Watch this space—discounted group tickets for our Recovery Warriors are coming very soon.

🏋️ Warriors Journey Bootcamps: We’ve officially received notification that Sport England will be funding our bootcamps starting in the New Year!

As we build out these projects, we want to make sure our social media feeds are giving you real value every single week. What would you like to see more of from us moving forward?

23/10/2026

Today I had the privilege of spending time with some incredible women at Growing Rooms which is a residential abstinence-based drug and alcohol recovery program in Leeds, https://www.stgeorgescrypt.org.uk/growing-rooms-ladies each at different stages of their recovery journey.

I first met some of the women and staff through the Recovery Games. During a conversation, I mentioned Whispers from the Heart, https://haveawordwithyourself.co.uk/whispers-from-the-heart/ and the rest, as they say, is history.

During the session, I shared why writing and journalling have become such important parts of my own recovery. For me, putting pen to paper is about far more than creating words on a page. It is about creating space. It is about giving myself permission to slow down long enough to listen to what I am really thinking and feeling.

Using the prompt, "What brought you here today?", the women took part in a story-writing exercise and reflected on their own recovery journeys. What struck me was that while they had all travelled to a similar destination, they had taken very different routes to get there.

Each woman had reached a point where she found the courage to make a stand and risk trying something different. For some, this was their first attempt at recovery. For others, it had taken many attempts. But they all shared one thing in common: they had not given up on themselves and that courage was reflected in everything they wrote and shared.

One woman told me she had already started writing her story. At 22,000 words in, she was looking for advice on what to do next and where to take it. From the brief glimpse she gave me into her journey, I can honestly say she has a story worth telling, and I look forward to connecting her with people who may be able to help. Another woman shared that she had recently started journalling and was already noticing the difference it was making in her life.

Moments like these remind me why I am so passionate about writing. Writing is not just about recording our experiences. It is about making sense of them. It is about reconnecting with ourselves. Sometimes, the simple act of putting pen to paper can be the first step towards finding a voice we thought we had lost.

Thank you to everyone at The Crypt for making me feel so welcome, and to the women who showed up with honesty, courage and openness. Your stories matter.

If you're a woman in recovery, or you know someone who is, I'd love to hear from you. More than 180 women from across the globe have already joined the Whispers from the Heart movement. Together, we're creating something truly special, a powerful collection of stories, reflections, poems and lived experiences that celebrate recovery, resilience and rediscovery.

Recovery can often feel isolating, but this project is proving that none of us have to do it alone. If you've got a story, a poem, a reflection, or simply a few words from the heart, get in touch and join this growing sisterhood. Your voice matters, and we'd love to welcome you.

A Must-Read for Our Recovery Community 📖💜

I’ve been meaning to share this for a while now after finally finishing a book written by one of our very own directors while I was away on a break.

From the very first time I met Tracey Ford almost 25 years ago, I knew there was something special about her. She is a true kindred spirit and a remarkable ambassador for recovery who has dedicated her life to raising up lived experience and supporting others.

In Blood is Thicker Than Alcohol, Tracey delivers a brutally honest, raw, and unfiltered account of her journey—from the struggles that led her down her path, to navigating the complexities of addiction, family, and healing. The statement on the bookmark beside her book—"You are stronger than your storm"—certainly sums up her journey and the resilience she embodies.

I want to extend a huge, heartfelt thank you to Tracey for everything she has done—and continues to do—for our growing community. I feel truly privileged to have her working alongside us to help shape the next chapter of The Recovery Games.

If you haven't picked it up yet, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Please give it a read—you won't regret it! 👇

🎉 A VERY Proud Dad & Recovery Games Moment!
🎉We are beyond thrilled to announce that Ella-may Firbank has been shortlisted for TWO awards at the Sheffield Youth Awards 2026: the Helping Others Award and The Community Champion Award! 🏆✨
As the founder of the Recovery Games, this one hits extra close to home for me. Ella-May is my youngest daughter, and she has been right by my side since day one, starting when she was just 5 years old. Not only has she volunteered countless hours of her own time to help shape and grow the Recovery Games, but she also regularly steps up to help out at events for my day job at Your Hearts and Minds and other local events. Watching her grow into such a selfless, passionate young woman and seeing her hard work recognized on a city-wide scale is an absolute dream as a father. Ella-May, you are the definition of a true and the absolute future of what we do. I couldn't be prouder of you! 💙🌟Please drop a comment below and help us celebrate this incredible young lady! 👏👇
