“Care home nursing staff are knowledgeable and experienced in clinical situations. We can’t heal everyone, but we always consider peoples’ wishes and aim to provide the best care possible in the right setting.”

This , we have published our review of UK learning disability nursing, and outlined our demands for governments to:

✅ Adopt field-specific, evidence-led workforce planning to accurately reflect where learning disability nurses work and how their expertise is used across sectors.

✅ Stabilise the learning disability nursing education pipeline and grow the workforce in line with the needs of the population.

Our latest data analysis shows that the number of learning disability nurses in the UK has fallen by a third, with less than 500 students studying the specialism in 2025.

The findings of this review must be a warning to governments that we cannot continue this path where learning disability nursing is consistently undermined. It’s a profession that is central to the safety, equity and human rights of people with learning disabilities.

Read more about the review: Safety, Equity and Expertise: A UK Review of Learning Disability Nursing. ⬇️

With staffing down by a third and demand rising, the RCN calls for immediate action to protect the future of the learning disability nursing profession
