Stort30 challenge

Stort30 is a scenic 30-mile ultra along the Hertfordshire and Essex border, following the river Stort and river Lee. It features a flat, fast 15-mile out-and-back route and a generous 8-hour cut-off, making it the perfect introduction to ultra running.
On 25th October, Stevenage Phoenix member, Scott Crawford, took part and successfully completed the challenge in 06:06:43.

Stevenage Half Marathon

Sunday 18th October was the Stevenage Half Marathon, hosted by the Fairlands Valley Spartans.

The Half Marathon route is two loops taking in Fairlands Valley Park and some of the town centre before returning to the start finish area for a second lap. Paul Smith, Damla Akkul and 2nd claim member, Jack Cant, all took part this year.

Jack, who runs JC Fitness Performance, led the warm up ahead of the race. He helped all the runners to “get those muscles moving, shake off the nerves and get ready to smash those 13.1 miles”.

Damla and Jack then ran the race together and both really enjoyed it.

Paul who was taking part for second year in a row, said “I held back for the first 2 miles as I went off too fast last year and paid later. This time it worked out well as I felt strong throughout including all the hill sections”.

Some impressive times on a tough course:

Paul Smith - 01:43:00

The Oysho Royal Parks Half Marathon

Sunday 11th October saw the return of annual Royal Parks Half Marathon, which takes in many of the capital’s world-famous landmarks on closed roads, and four of London’s eight Royal Parks – Hyde Park, Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens.

Caitlin Evans, Damla Akkul, Juliette Fletcher and Katka Laughton all took part and had the following to say about the event:

Katka
“I was running the Royal Parks to raise money for Diabetes UK and I would like to say big thank you to everyone who supported me. I really enjoyed the route and the weather was perfect. Me and Damla run together the first 12 miles and then I sped it up so I could get my sub 2 hours”

Juliette
“For my first half marathon I was really pleased with sub 2 hours and I feel that since joining the club this has really improved my running and I am now more confident to do things out of my comfort zone.“

Damla really enjoyed the event and Caitlin was happy with a sub 2hr half 🥳.

Some rather impressive times were achieved:

Caitlin Evans - 01:58:21
Damla Akkul - 02:00:39
Juliette Fletcher - 01:59:17
Katka Laughton - 01:59:44

AEPG Great Eastern Run

The AEPG Great Eastern Run took place on Sunday 11th October and three members of Phoenix went along to try their hand at the fast and flat course around the streets of Peterborough City Centre. Jon Boe commented that it was a “well organised, large race with around 9,500 competitors on a fairly flat course… I was pleased to come away with a 6 minute PB.” Ashley Bates said that it was a “great event, perfect course and the crowds were amazing. Glad to be back out there racing. I'm happy with my time, it was what I aimed for”. Peter Tungate paced his race perfectly with negative splits.

MBNA Chester Metric Marathon

The MBNA Chester Metric Marathon is the UK's orignal and most popular metric marathon, selling out every year. It gives runners one of the only opportunities in the UK to race 26.2km.
The event was held on 11th October and was one of the two grand finale events in the Chester Triple Medal series… a challenge that Phoenix member, Rhian Bethall, took on this year: “I loved the Chester metric marathon! The atmosphere, the organisation, everything just made it such an enjoyable event. That was the third and final run in the Chester triple series which also included the completion of the 10k and half marathon earlier in the year (you could also do the full marathon), and the medal was epic!” Rhian completed the 26.2km course in 02:51:08.

Munich Marathon

On Sunday 11th October eight members of the club took part in the Munich Marathon.

The race starts at Spiridon-Louis-Ring in the Olympic Park and finishes at Willi-Daume-Platz at the Olympic Lake. The highlights on the course feature the Olympic Park, Siegestor, Marienplatz, Werksviertel, English Garden and Isar.

Andrew Liddle and Andy Chapman gave us an insight into the running part of the weekend.

Andrew Liddle
"Munich was a great trip, with a fantastic group. We had a great time over the weekend. The race itself was really good, it felt pretty flat and fast, the crowds and the atmosphere were good and it took us through lots of different areas of the city. I'd certainly recommend it in the future."

Andy Chapman
"We all had a great time, with the race weekend punctuated by one or two excellent opportunities to get to enjoy what Munich had to offer, beyond a Marathon.
Course and conditions were A1, even if some of the event organisation wasn’t. Nonetheless, we were all pleased with our efforts, with me coming away with a well earned time of 4:30:33, including a negative split second half. Danke München!"

The guys certainly enjoyed celebrating post race after picking up some great times:

Andy Chapman - 04:30:33
Bobby Buckley - 03:43:22
