Wigtownshire u3a Gardening Group visited the walled garden of a member in Wigtown, which was originally the kitchen garden of a large house next door, and is mostly overgrown and shady, with some unusual sculptures made from found objects. The current owner, who has owned it since 2022 and is half way through a renovation project, found aerial photos of the garden in 2009, when the layout of paths was visible, and in 2017 when the trees and bushes were already quite high.

The next visit will be to the greenhouses at Threave Gardens, with a talk by the greenhouse manager, on Monday 19th October.

We had a tremendous time at the August monthly meeting. Stephen Liddle galloped us through a history of the British Isles and how the use of cavalry influenced social history. With the aid of a Norman knight on horseback and some native defenders against some spear throwers he demonstrated the limitations of cavalry such as when against the tactics of the Scots. We enjoyed it and learned something too.

Due to the book festival our next monthly meeting is in October. Look out on Facebook for more details.

Wigtownshire u3a invite you to join us for our monthly meeting 28th August at 10.30am at The Merse, Wigtown. u3a member Steve Liddle will be presenting A Social History of Cavalry.

The charge for non members is £3; or get full membership for £10 for the rest of the year and the talk is free.

Steve gives details below:

British Society as we know it was a product of the Norman Conquest which introduced the concept of the elite knight on horseback as the ultimate weapon of the battlefield. At least, that’s how it was taught in schools and portrayed on the silver screen for decades. Through a re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings featuring a cast of thousands (well, a dozen or so people, actually) explore a different approach to social and military history as we take you on a thousand year old journey in search of the class system of the British Isles.

Wigtownshire u3a Gardening Group visited a member's garden in Kirkcowan. This lovely garden has been created over the five years that the current owners have lived there, and contains a wide variety of plants, a rockery, a pond, a greenhouse, and a small meadow area.

The next visit will be to a walled garden in Wigtown on Monday 21 September.
